A Fun & Farcical Audio Adventure Story
I am somewhat surprised to see that no one else has written a review of this. A a Neal Stephenson completionist, I bought this disc to round out my collection of his writings and other creative output (I admit I am unfamiliar with the work of his co-author).The story functions like an old radio play, subdivided into chapters, with intro bumper music, sound effects, and a variety of voice actors (unlike, say, an audiobook, with one narrator and no music or sound effects). The story unfolds as a fantasy-adventure, with a generous portion of yuks thrown in. It is a decent story, told well, though perhaps one can be forgiven for doubting the efficacy or plausibility of an army of sinister, merciless, and blindly-obedient henchmen roaming the planet in Saville Row suits, bowler hats, and Bentleys - a combination that would be the opposite of the nondescript appearance that they would need to carry out their clandestine assignments.Anyway, the disc ripped to my computer without difficulty, and I ported it to my phone (though I had trouble getting it to remember and mark which chapters I had already heard; perhaps the files should be classed as “podcasts” in order to facilitate the “played/unplayed” function. All in all, a pretty fun yarn, funnily spun.
