Near East Tabouleh - A Versatile and Delicious Mix
I recently began purchasing the Near East Tabouleh mix last year and was thoroughly impressed with this convenient bulgur wheat salad base. The 5.25 oz box contains a perfect blend of bulgur wheat, parsley, garlic, mint, and other seasonings that creates an authentic foundation for this Middle Eastern classic. What I love most about this mix is how customizable it is. I added fresh tomatoes, cucumber, and even threw in some peas (not traditional, but delicious!) along with a generous squeeze of lemon juice as directed on the package. The result was a refreshing, light, and incredibly flavorful salad that took minimal effort to prepare. The bulgur wheat has a pleasant texture - tender but still with a nice chew - and the dried herbs in the mix provide a good starting point for flavor. It's also quite healthy, being low in fat and providing a good amount of fiber (about 12% of your daily value per serving). At around $4-5 per box, it's reasonably priced for the convenience it offers. While nothing beats completely homemade tabouleh with fresh herbs, this mix is a fantastic shortcut that still delivers on taste and authenticity. It's become a staple in my pantry for quick, healthy meals and side dishes.

Really Good
First off -you have to like mint. If you hate mint, skip this product. What I love most about it is the flavorful spice profile, which reminds of Moroccan mint style dishes. I also love love love that it is so tasty yet lower on sodium than the other Near East offerings which contain much more salt (curried couscous is even lower and if you need no sodium stick with plain couscous). I find that one of these super small boxes makes two meal-size servings or four servings if it's just a side. I highly recommend this as a hearty, filling, nutritious, and tasty alternative to rice. You can eat this as a meal, too, if you throw some protein on it. I cook it in a small frying pan with a little water, the seasoning packet, and olive, oil -add the tabouleh after all that starts to boil then reduce head to very low simmer and cover. It cooks fairly quickly -just make sure to use the correct amount of water. I never measure, so it's very forgiving but don't drown it in water. If fluffs up beautifully and tastes best with some butter (I use unsalted) mixed on top right before eating.

Got what I asked for

It was okay...
It isn't as good as homemade, of course, I found it a bit dry and bland, but once I "doctored" it up with additional tomato, oil, lemon juice, and extra chopped fresh mint, it was better. I think I'll stick with homemade from now on.

The Near East Taboule Mix contains both the wheat and a spice mix. Do the fast cook, add the tomatoes and lemon juice, let it sit in your fridge overnight to meld the flavours and you have a fantastic tasting salad. The secret is their spice mix. When my local grocery stopped carrying Near East, I tried the brand they brought in and their recipe and was disappointed. No spice packet. Tried to mimic the Near East spice packet, but never got it quite right. So I am delighted to be able to access Near East products again. How good is it? People have asked and emailed me for the recipe after tasting it. It is that good and that simple.
