Great show, but cheap packaging.
I've always loved the series, and love that it is on blu ray.It came in 2 large disk cases with a sort of binder system, both within one of those cardboard boxes. If there is a down side, it's those cases. They cannot hold on to the disks. Always falling out. I'm going to end up looking for other cases, just to prevent damaging the disks. A lot of the different Star Trek collections on Blu Ray, seem to have these crummy cases.

Great!
Have waited years for a set of the "Original Series" that was reasonably affordable. Enjoyed seeing the whole episodes without the cuts for commercials that the re-runs always do. Video and Sound quality were excellent. The included extra material was interesting. These brought back great memories of my childhood. Only complaint is the loud background noises that play when reading the menu for each disk.

Great show, good discs, the case blows.
I know it seems kinda lame to knock a star off because of a case, however, if taking the discs out and putting them back in might break your discs, then that is a solid reason for knocking a star off of it. I wouldn't take more than 1 star off because well the rest of the product is great and I don't want anyone to think that I didn't like the discs or the show. You really should get some 3rd party cases for your discs though and NEVER use the original case and this is a true shame as you lose the original cover and it is harder to keep them in one place. I back up my discs to a video server and just taking them out that one time, I felt like i was going to break 2 or 3 of my discs and I am very careful. Very Very Very bad case.

Finally!!!
I have been wanting the original series for ever. Never bought them though. Amazon had these for the right price and I snagged 'em. The quality is unbelievable! I don't know how they make these old shows look so good but I am flabbergasted. There are both version of each episode too. You can watch each episode as it was made or you can watch them remastered with CGI graphics in them. I am very impressed. I wish the packaging was just a little better because there are like 3 disks on each side so you have to pull two out to get to the one on the bottom but it is what it is. The menus have a navigation on them so there is a fair amount of clicking to advance to the next episode. I think there are 5 episodes to each disk. There didn't seem to be a way to just hit play and let them all just play through. Other than that I am very happy and impressed with how well these are done. I love the old Star Trek. I recommend these.

Blu-Ray Steel Book Review
Star Trek Original Series is what I grew up on. This is for fans old enough to know the original crew and hopefully young viewers give it a chance. About this Blu-ray set: This is a Steel book. I’m not a big fan of steel books but I admit it’s a beautiful looking package. I’m not so happy with the way the discs are stored. 4 discs on each side stacked directly on top of each other, but honestly in a steel book, I don’t see how it could have been done better. If it had been in a plastic case, each disc could have its own spindle and then you risk discs falling off due to how thin it all must be. About this presentation: Star Trek, the original series, is presented in it's original 4:3 aspect ratio with new enhanced special effects interlaced within the show replacing the old, outdated effects. The old effects show their age to the point that you wish they could look better. The new effects are respectful of the old effects and look very much like the old effects, but just so much better. The Gorn looks the same, but he can now blink. In “The Ultimate Computer” the power blast scene is greatly enhanced is very impressive looking, the ships are all recreated in CG which look fine even by today’s standards. The old “ship” effects suffered from poor matting & often had parts of the ship that disappeared, and they just don’t hold up at all. The best part is Paramount had the wisdom to give you BOTH old and new versions in a seamless branching design so you can switch back and forth between them for comparison if desired. I’m including some screenshots to show comparisons for readers. See if you can tell which is old and which is new. Trivia: Did you know, Chekov & Sulu did not appear in the same episode until the end of season 2. Chekov was not introduced until season 2. Overall this is a highly recommended package and worth the price of admission.
