A GOOD BOOK
Assuming most of this book is accurate it provides incite into the Texas war for independence. I knew that the Mexican government under General Santa Anna was oppressive but not to the extent described in this book. I was also unaware that there was a major battle between the Texas freedom fighters and the Mexican army in San Antonio. I will be looking forward to the next book.

History in person
Well written. Primarily for teens and preteens who want a more personal view of the events surrounding the Texan war with Mexico for independence. The main character who views and participates in the major events is a teen. Alsheler has written several series of his type. It gives a more intimate view of the crises in the early history of this country, especially west of the Allegheny mountains. than you are likely to get from conventional history books. More fun to read too. I originally read these books when I was an early teen and remembered them favorably through all these years.

OK Read
This is the first of three books written by Altsheler about Texas' fight to free itself from rule by Mexico. I read the second book, the book about the Alamo, first. I would recommend reading the book being reviewed first, because it introduces you to the various characters and how they met. This book doesn't have nearly the historical content of the second book, and as a result it seems to move kind of slow at times. With that said, it was still an ok read if you want to learn more about Texas' fight to free itself from Mexico.

An OK Read compared with others by JAA.
I read the 2nd Texas Trilogy out of sequence and really enjoyed it-Texan Battle of Alamo & Goliad. It was very interesting combining history with our 3 friends. So I decided to go back and get their history, oh it was so hard staying with the book with his "oh, Ned" stories and the ever present being nice to the enemy. I fought the urge to go to last chapter many times but stayed true and read the book Only because I wanted to see how Bowie, Crockett, Houston and others came into the picture before the battle at the Alamo.

I realily loved this book
I realily loved this book. You go from one problem to another very nicely. Our hero's do a great job living at over 100 years ago. Excellent reading for any age from the young to the old. Just a very well written book on a very good subject. This author did a super job. This took place during the beginning of the Texas war with Mexico. I could not put this down. Great author.
