Impressed So Far!
Super easy to install. Right away I was surprised to see my compressor drop from 1600W when running to less than 1100W. That'll save some serious money on the electric bill. Highly recommend for older units that might have degraded performance like mine clearly did!!Nerd tech note: I use Sense for whole home energy monitoring and the compressor must have a new energy signature after installing this. It detected a new device pretty quickly which makes sense (hah)...

Start capacitor
Product seems fine, but my heat pump still not working.

Worked great for about 6 weeks, then came home to a dead outside unit.
Worked great for about 6 weeks, then came home to a dead outside unit. Outside compressor was tripping the breaker. Opened up the outside unit and found that the capacitor on the hard start kit had blown. I removed the kit and now all is well, the outside unit works as it should. I will still probably purchase a Hard Start Kit but I'll make sure its an actual 5-2-1 branded unit. I though this one was, I was mistaken. Kit blew up just after the return date passed.

Works as advertised, this substantially reduced startup surge
My lights were dimming in the house when the AC would turn on, and it had a loud bang at startup. So I ordered this hoping to eliminate the noise and lights dimming. When I went to install I measured the start capacitor in it and found it to be bad, it was a 1/4th of what it should have been. So I got a new start capacitor, which is a dual compressor and fan capacitor. Then I added this startup cap in too.I measured the startup current with the bad capacitor and it peaked at 85 amps and took about 2-3 seconds to level out to a constant power. With the new capacitor in it was reduced to 55 amps peak and 1-2 seconds to level out. With this soft start attached it never went above 8 amps and leveled out nearly instantly. Startup is quiet, no lights dimming, and now I can use it on my generator if I wanted.

Nice idea but not very durable
During yearly maintenance by AC tech to maintain 10 year warranty they wanted to sell me this item to protect the compressor. Their argumentc sounded reasonable so I decided to install it myself. An easy install. The unit failed after 2 years 9 months of use. Looks like the capacitor failed. When it failed the compressor wouldn't run so I just disconnected it. Debating if I want to install a new one. Picture is what it looked like when removed.

How can you go wrong?
I had done some reading on hard start kits and even though I have not experienced any of the problems I have read that others are having, thought I would give this a try.My system is about 20 years old and I would like to get a couple more years out of it.I watched a couple of vidio's about hooking it up and it was just that simple. You dont have to be an HVAC guy to do this, just make sure the power is off.I would recommend this product to anyone.

No more dimming lights
I had a 5-2-1-hard start kit on my 4-ton heat pump for quite a few years and a capacitor replaced in the past few years. The previous hard start never eliminated the light dimming when the unit started. I did a search and found a service bulletin by the heat pump manufacturer that the unit had a higher capacitance requirement than originally recommended. Anyhow, THESE THINGS DO GO BAD. My old one had lost capacitance to 1/3 of the original rating. Installed a new capacitor and this hard start kit and I no longer get light dimming to alert me the unit has started. Very pleased.
