The Louvin Brothers music has stood the test of time. Their music sounds as thrilling today as ever. This anthology captures the very essence of the duo at the peak of their powers. Their sublime harmonies and hard-driving take on traditional country provided the blueprint for many generations of country and rock musicians that is referenced in succeeding generations, from the enigmatic Gram Parsons ("The Christian Life", "Cash on the Barrelhead") and his protege Emmylou Harris ("If I Could Only Win Your Love", "When I Stop Dreaming") to a long list of adherents. This album presents their essential recordings and all their charted hits like "My Baby's Gone", "When I Stop Dreaming", "You're Running Wild" and Charlie Louvin's 1964 solo hit "I Don't Love You Anymore".

What a great find...
For those of you who don't like lengthy reviews, stop here and purchase this item. I cannot imagine anyone not liking this album. As for those still here, this album is simply incredible. I purchased it on a whim, as I love to explore all forms of American music, and somehow the Louvin Brothers have eluded me for many years, although I have been peripherally aware of them for some time now.I guess the recent passing of Charlie Louvin finally caught my attention enough to seek out their music, and boy, am I glad I did. This album is truly essential for anyone that likes harmony vocals, good bluegrass, gospel, murder ballads, upbeat funny songs, and oh so much more. One of my favorite Allison Kraus songs. I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby, is actually a cover of the Louvins original included herein. Also, when you listen to this music, you can't help but notice how many of the great harmonizers must have been influenced by these guys. Unfortunately, Ira Louvin died all too young, and the duo ceased to exist, although the late Charlie Louvin performed up until his recent passing. This truly is an essential album, and thus deserves 5 stars.

Great assortment from the Louvin Brothers in their prime
Fantastic CD. This was given as a gift, along with the Louvin Brothers Nearer My God to Thee CD, Nearer My God To Thee The recipient is a major fan of the Louvin Brothers - knows all there stuff - and these two CDs pleased the receiver immensely! I highly recommend either of these CDs, or both, to anyone to loves the Louvins. Great collections of their songs, covering a range of styles, especially good for the price when you notice there are 30 tracks on this CD.PS: I think this book Satan Is Real: The Ballad of the Louvin Brothers combined with the CDs (Nearer My God to Thee and My Baby's Gone) makes a fairly complete package for any serious fan who might want to get into the nitty gritty behind the brothers.

Kudos to Edison
I have made a real effort to collect all the music of the Louvin Brothers, including some albums by other great singers who recorded their songs, as they were influenced by the Louvin Brothers' amazing music and harmonies. Thank you, Charlie and Ira, for this rich legacy.

Most older CD's aren't worth the money, this is that exception in Big Print.
Lots of older Country Music Fans will remember the Louvin Brothers, but have a hard time identifying some of their songs. Once you hear them again you can't help remembering why they were great in their time. Buy this CD you'll be glad you did.

The Essential Louvin Brothers
Essential American roots music. Many great songs here ("Must You Throw Dirt in My Face," etc.) Worth the price for "Christian Life" alone -- it can bring tears to the eyes of an atheist like me. If you are only familiar with the versions of "Christian Life" on "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" by the Byrds, this is the real deal. Five stars in red, white, and blue.

Cash on the Barrelhead
Another excellent compilation by Raven Records in Australia (see Loretta Lynn or Gene Clark: American Dreamer or Jose Feliciano ). Raven: "high quality anthologies compiled and prepared with knowledge, integrity and attention to detail."There are many Louvin collections at the moment; Raven produced three! This one includes 30 songs from their Capitol recordings, including Charlie Louvin's 1964 solo hit `I Don't Love You Anymore'. The songs are here that Gram Parsons (`The Christian Life') and Emmylou Harris (`If I Could Only Win Your Love') and together (`Cash on the Barrelhead' and "The Angels Rejoiced Last Night") let us love. Almost all the songs covered on the marvellous Light In The Attic tribute are here: Livin', Lovin', Losin' .

Every country fan should own this
This album tells us what Country is all about, and as an added extra, is fabulous music. If you are a country fan you will love the playing and the harmonies on this album. For the historians you can hear some elements of where country came from with the mandolin and guitar playing. It takes us through what other Brothers copied in their hay day of the 60s and 70s, and then on to how it influenced the likes of Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss. A masterpiece of country music. It was listening to music like this in the 70's in Scotland that I developed a life long love of Country. You should buy it.

Country harmonies at their best
I've long been familiar with some of the Louvin Brothers songs through Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton etc. but have only just started listening to the brothers themselves. An excellent album with probably more recognisable songs that you might expect. It's not difficult to see where the Everly Brothers and others got their influence from. Highly recommended.
