A CARTOON FEATURE
The story of how the Walt Disney Studios began is quite interesting. Disney was animating a cartoon series called "Oswald The Lucky Rabbit," for a company in Chicago, but according to Walt, "they took that away from me." So he had to come up with a new character. On the train going back to Los Angeles, Walt started drawing different animals. One of them was a mouse with large ears and a long tail. Walt wanted to call him Mortimer. His wife suggested Mickey. And just like that, "A Star Is Born."According to one source I read, when Walt finished his first "Mickey" cartoon (probably "Plane Crazy," 1928), he invited the whole neighborhood over to watch it. In his garage! Also around that time, he decided that he would never work for anyone else again. He began his own studio, "Walt Disney Pictures." And in 1929, he would make the first sound cartoon, "Steamboat Willie." But if you examine the movie closely, you'll realize that it's really a silent cartoon with sound effects. In any case, Walt was doing fairly well with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and the rest of them, and he had a distribution deal with RKO.Then he made the decision that, in many ways, changed his entire life. He would make a cartoon feature. Most of the people at the studio thought he was nuts. One morning when he came to work, he found a sign taped to one of the projectors: "STICK TO SHORTS!" Naturally, he wasn't pleased, but he never did find out who did it. The fact of the matter is, however, that he had virtually all his money invested in "Snow White." If it flopped, it would have meant the end of Walt Disney Studios.Much of the picture is a pleasant little fairy tale, although there are a few scenes that are just too scary for young children. Snow White goes to work as a housekeeper and cook for the Seven Dwarfs, who work in a gold mine. They sing on their way to work ("Heigh-Ho"). (In 1937, most people were glad to have any kind of work.) But all the time, Snow White dreams of a handsome prince, who will come and take her away to his kingdom ("Some Day My Prince Will Come").But of course, all cannot go smoothly (it's a fairy tale). A wicked queen, jealous of Snow White's beauty, disguises herself as a kindly old lady. She's selling apples, and she gives one to Snow White. Instantly, Snowy falls asleep. She can only be awakened by the kiss of a handsome prince, who eventually rides up on his white horse."Snow White" was not only successful, but it won an Academy Award. (A famous photo shows Shirley Temple giving the Oscar to Walt. ) In light of the picture's success, producer Leon Schlesinger was asked if Warner Brothers was contemplating a cartoon feature. He replied, "I need a cartoon feature like I need two ______________." According to the Hollywood Production Code of 1934, I cannot reveal his last word, but I will give you a hint: it's a part of the human body.So in conclusion, I can only echo Walt's own words, which he once said on his television show. "We must never lose sight of the fact that it all started with a mouse."
