How is this better than the previous version?

I haven't noticed this being any louder then the previous. The bass is a little better and ports are covered. I think for $33.99 when on sale it's a good deal at only $4 more then the original but at $40 Not so much. The original is $29.99.

How many watts is this? Does higher watts equal louder volume?

The new SoundCore 2 has double the watts (2 x 6w instead of 2 x 3w). But...in order to double the volume you'd need to have 10 times the watts. So you'd need a pair of 30W speakers to double the volume. It was instantly clear to my wife (not an audiophile, nor am I) that the SoundCore 2 sounded better. It's just not "night and day" better, nor is it "double the volume" better. Is it $10 worth better? Yes...not just for the better sound, but it's been refined to be a better over all experience which I talked about in my review.

Can you use a cord to plug in directly to phone

Yes, using either a male to male 3.5 mm aux cable OR a usb-c to male 3.5 mm aux cable, whichever your phone supports. Note that there may be a noticeable lag, meaning it won't be appropriate for watching videos or playing games. That was my experience, perhaps not all speakers have this issue. This was on the most recent firmware (4/19/19)
