The Winnebago Tribe (Bison Book S)

The Complete Word on the Winnebago
To say that Paul Radin's "The Winnebago Tribe" is exhaustive would be an understatement. Every aspect of the Winnebago experience is covered in this book; from theories of origins clear down to the most mundane tool. I cannot imagine the countless numbers of hours spent or resources Mr. Radin accumulated to write this book. And the beauty of it is, he breaks his topics down to small chapters so that if you are only interested in specific things, you can go to chapters titled thus and not have to read forty or fifty pages of information you don't care as much about. I only have two minor issues with this book. Mr. Radin was a history writer after the old school, not like today when writers glory in making their stories colorful. Some passages can seem dry. Also, I have a personal steak in this book, that is why I bought it. My third great-grandmother was a "Winnebago." That word comes from a derogatory term the enemy nations gave that meant, "Dirty Water." Today's history writers would have used the proper "Ho Chunk" in reference to the People. Please Don't let these two petty gripes turn you away from a classic work of the history and ways of a great nation. From whatever angle you approach it, this book will satisfy you.

History and minutiae
This is an old book and as the writing is less than scintillating. That said, for the serious student of Winnebago history, Radin's book is an essential starting place.
