I am an Aveda grad and I know a lot about skincare and which ingredients are best to use for what problems. I have nail psoriasis and it causes the skin around my nails to constantly be dry and irritated. This product has a high concentration of urea. Urea is a chemical exfoliant and a humectant. Urea breaks the bonds between dead skin cells and living skin cells allowing dead skin to slough off and reveal healthy skin underneath and it pulls water from the air into the skin keeping the skin hydrated and healthy. Products like this usually cost a lot of money but this is such a reasonable price for a high concentration urea product. The price is one of the reasons I am leaving a review. People pay a lot of money for exfoliating products. There is no difference between this product and a $50 product with high urea. I’ve seen a lot of products out there advertising 60% or higher urea content. This is false advertising. That concentration of urea would need to be a prescription product and used under supervision of a doctor. This product does not say what the urea concentration is and that’s ok because I can tell that it is on the higher end (but still OTC strength). I use this on both my feet and my hands. It helps remove the dry dead skin around my nails from nail psoriasis. I normally have to use an emery board to file that skin off but this product makes it much easier. I only have to file about once a week because this prevents most of the build up. It also keeps my skin on my hands and feet smooth, soft and hydrated. Urea is a gentle exfoliant (unless used in prescription strengths for things like nail removal in severe fungal cases) and its humectant properties make it perfect for use on dry feet and dry hands. Dry skin is dead skin which is why you can apply as much lotion as you want but still feel that the skin is dry. The dry skin needs to come off in order to reveal healthy hydrated skin underneath. There are several ways to remove dead skin, either mechanically (like filing your feet) or chemically (urea and acids break the chemical bonds between dead skin and living skin). Lactic acid is also a great chemical exfoliant and humectant but it is slightly more irritating than urea. For gentle exfoliation urea is the best. This does not irritate my nail psoriasis or cause it to flare and it works so well that it almost feels like I don’t have nail psoriasis. Because urea is a humectant and draws water into your skin you will want to take precautions against fungal infections while using moisturizing products on the feet. Moist and dark environments are perfect for fungi. When I use this product I use it only at night on my feet and hands (primarily around my nails and cuticles). Never in the day when I will be putting socks on and my feet will be in shoes all day. This product is best to use at night without socks on the feet. This allows it to work but does not create a hospitable environment for fungi. Urea is anti-fungal anyway but it isn’t foolproof and you can still get a fungal infection from over moisturizing during the day and then putting your feet in dark shoes. I put this on before bed and allow it to work its magic overnight. In the morning I shower and then powder my feet to prevent fungal infections. In fact, many people with extremely calloused and dry feet actually have fungal infections and just don’t know it. Infected feet will also become “waterlogged” when placed in water. The skin will appear sort of whitish/gray, wrinkly and sort of “expand” when exposed to water for about 15 minutes. This is a sign of a fungal infection. I pair this with antifungal products as well as keeping my feet dry and wearing appropriate socks (not cotton, cotton is not ideal for socks, it actually creates a perfect environment for fungi, bamboo viscose is usually cheaper and keeps feet more dry by wicking away moisture). Removing dead skin also removes a source of food for fungi so this foot cream is ideally paired with antifungal powders and also appropriate socks. What makes this product stand out is its low cost, its remarkable exfoliating and moisturizing properties as well as the fact that it isn’t greasy. When I wake up in the morning the product has fully absorbed and I’m not sliding around in my slippers with slimy feet. A lot of other moisturizers leave my feet feeling slimy and gross. This product does not do that. Paired with good foot hygiene this keeps my feet looking and feeling healthy and prevents the buildup of dead skin that is a feast for fungi. I do not need to file the callouses on my feet if I use this product nightly. It saves me time and effort and keeps my feet clean and healthy. If you are constantly needing to file your feet you may have a fungal infection. They do not always present as peeling and itching and often present as extremely dry and calloused feet. It is important to address dry and calloused feet because athlete’s foot infection can make it to the nails and cause nail fungus. Once it has done that….it is either 3 months of antibiotics or a year of twice daily topical treatment. Some people never get rid of nail fungus and need to manage it for the rest of their lives. No thanks. I am extremely prone to fungal infections because of the nail psoriasis so I have to be very careful and take precautions against fungal infections. Overall this is a great product at an amazing price and it can be used on other parts of the body as well as the feet. I use it on my hands, elbows and feet. It removes dead skin creating an inhospitable environment for fungi (fungi can’t eat living skin). The price is great. You do not need to spend a lot of money to keep your feet healthy and I don’t recommend overpriced foot products as they simply are not better than this lower cost option. I see balms and creams out there that are nearly $50 for the same exact product in different packaging. Don’t be fooled by those products. This product paired with an antifungal spray or powder in shoes will keep your feet healthy, moisturized and prevent fungal infections. If your feet are dry, cracked or have a lot of dead skin, try this out for a few weeks. It may take a few weeks to remove the dead skin but after that it’s simply maintenance. If you do file your feet for any reason use disposable files. Using files more than once is exactly how you get fungal infections. Never use a file to file skin and then use the same file for nails because if you happen to have a fungal infection you can easily spread it to your nails using the same file. Definitely recommend this product and appreciate its low cost effectiveness.
