PENGUIN North and South

still so actual
Everybody's talking about the Bronte sisters or Austen but to me this book can at least be put on the same level and even higher than some books of the former writers. Not only a tale of a family moving from rural southside to urban northside but also show the struggle of classes, between employer and employees and the unions, which is still going on in 2018. The good thing is that Gaskell shows both sides so it makes it difficult for the reader to chose sides. Oh yea, why do 2 people liking each other so much always have to make it more difficult than necessary?

Value for money
For a Penguin Classic published in 1995 this second hand paperback copy of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel "North and South" was a good buy for 93p. The cover is a little wrinkly and the pages are turning brown around the edges but they are all there, and undamaged. No margins annotated, no page corners turned down, no stains or marks. It was delivered on time, and was sensibly packaged.

Oxford World Classics appalling typography makes the book unreadable
Oxford World Classics appalling typography makes the book unreadableI can see no pleasure or enjoyment in reading this book on paper in this combination of print size, font, line and character spacing ... I might as well just read it on Kindle or watch one of the old TV series. No point in buying a book unless the act of reading is a joy!

Macmillan Collector's Library
I purchased the MacMillan Collector's Library Edition of this book. They are very compact editions - smaller than paperbacks - and come complete with dust jacket, and ribbon page marker.Print may be too small for some; I find it perfectly readable, myself.

BEAUTIFUL LITTLE BOOK
I was so impressed and overjoyed when I received my little book of North and South. The petit book was displayed beautifully with it's illustrated and embossed gold book title and authors name and the page edgings were also embossed in gold. The inside of the book has a beautiful pattern and the actual book frontage without it's cover is embossed with a flowery pattern. The print inside is very readable even with my ageing eyes. I was so thrilled with this purchase that I ordered another one straight away Jane Eyre to add to a collection that I am starting right now. These little books would make ideal gifts.
