Not the best.
Not the best british miniserie but I spent an ok evening watching it.What was interesting for me was to see how different people live in the same street, with different background, ages, income, race, etc.

Review of the DVD version of a “whodunit” in a multi-cultural block in England. NO SPOILERS HERE!
If you’ve read my other reviews on Amazon you will know that I really dislike reviews with spoilers in them. Some reviewers cover so much in their reviews (after watching a mystery) that they spoil the fun for prospective buyers. I do my hardest not to do that. After all, they are called “mysteries” for a reason. This 2015 British TV series was made for British commercial TV, which is why each of the 4 episodes here run about 47 minutes each. So the total time is just over three hours. Surprisingly, the producer says in the bonus featurette that it was produced as a “three part, three hour series”! That must have changed because each of the FOUR episodes here start with a “previously on..” recap of what has gone before. The “mystery” here is who has been sending postcards to the neighbors in one block of a street where property prices seem to be rising. The cards just say “We Want What You Have”. You’ll learn who is sending them by the end of the series, but there story that the screenwriter (adapting a book by the same title) wants to tell is how various ethinc groups (Indian, Pakistani, Hungarian, Croatian, African, etc.) have their lives intertangled. I won’t tell you any more so you can discover it yourself. You shouldn’t give up after the first episode – which is really there to introduce the multitude of characters, but there are clues in that first episode that will be crucial for you to know when things are (mostly) sorted out in the end. There are, however, some “loose ends” still left. No, this is not the beginning of an ongoing series. There will be no “Capital 2”, but depending on which characters you relate to most (and different viewers will rate to different characters) you may – as I did – feel that their story was not given a satisfactory conclusion.Of the cast members you’ll probably most recognize Toby Jones. He has a distinctive look, and Gemma Jones as well. The DVD has easy to read English subtitles but this time I didn’t need them. There is one “bonus feature” – the now-requisite “The Making of…” featurette (17 minutes) which has comments from the production staff – but (surprisingly) none of the actors. This wasn’t the best of mysteries I’ve seen lately but it’s only 3 hours total and I found the characters – as acted worth watching.I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.Steve Ramm“Anything Phonographic”

A relevant story for today’s modern culture-mix society
One upscale fictional street of South London gets mail, everyone alike, and the street is eclectic. White, Pakistani, Hungarian, Polish, African, families, singles, young, old, different faiths and each homeowner’s real estate value is their ‘CAPITAL.’ The mailed card reads: “We want what you have.” Who’s it from—what’s it mean? Then things really begin to go strange. It is an intellectual relationship drama adapted from the best-seller of the same name by John Lanchester. It asks social questions while leaving viewers to answer for themselves.Loved it. My wife loved it. 2 thumbs up.Compelling thought-producing drama.SDH SUBTITLES for all 4 episodes, each about 45 minutes plus for ‘Making of’ bonus. Meet the community of Pepys Road. Don’t give up with this first episode, as it takes time to introduce the large cast of characters along with their individual situations as well as the main plot. Banker Roger (Toby Jones –‘Detectorists’) and wife Arabella (Rachael Stirling –‘Bletchley Circle’) seem often at odds. Arabella hires Bogdan, a Polish carpenter yet again. Pakistan shopkeeper Ahmed (Adeel Akhtar) gets help from his brothers Shahid and Usman and wife Rohinka. At #84 lives life-long resident Petunia (Gemma Jones –‘Duchess of Duke Street’) who has a daughter Mary (Lesley Sharp –‘Scott and Bailey’) and grandson (Robert Emms –‘War Horse’). Quentina (Wunmi Mosaku –‘Vera’) is from Zimbabwe, an illegal hiding as a meter maid. As Roger anticipates an employee bonus; DI Mill (Bryan Dick –‘Bleak House’) investigates the street’s curious mailings. Christmas approaches. (The novel published in 2012 was story-set in 2008, but the miniseries pushes it ahead to 2014.) The stalker photo postcards move to DVDs followed by worse. Quentina is detained and the Muslim Kamal brothers have their own holiday surprise. Roger hires nanny Matya (Zrinka Cvitesic –a beautiful & talented actress that I hope to see more from). March 2015. Matya gets some suitors. Petunia’s health deteriorates. Bogdan lands another redecorating job. Detainee Quentina’s fate is eminent. A shocking discovery at #84 Pepys Road; and a police raid. June and Roger, Shahid, Quentina, & Bogdan each have a personal drama to be settled. Life on Pepys Road remains under police investigation. Expect the unexpected.

gelungene Mini-Serie
Eine mit viel Anteilnahme und untergründigem Witz aufwartende (Mini-)Serie. Die Charaktere sind gut ausgezeichnet und schauspielerisch bestens besetzt.

Total waste of time
Hate to give negative reviews, but this was the most boring DVD I have seen in years. Total non story. Had tremendous potential and as you watched layer by layer getting somewhere, they all fell flat.
