Perfect
I bought these in 2015 to connect my Logitech X-540 5.1 speakers to an optical sound source. It is currently connected to my Apple TV and I can easily switch to my bluray using the coaxial cable. The sound is excellent and the surround works amazing.

Defective and/or returned/restock product
IT was supposed to be new, but it was a restock/refurb/return. There is a lot of noise in the subwoofer line out, I'm wondering if this is why it was returned. My guess is that they repackaged it and sent it back out faulty :(If it wasn't for the noise problem it would be a great product. I tested other devices on the optical line coming in and they didn't have any kind of noise issue. Unfortunately my receiver doesn't output optical, hence the converter. I'll try to find another device...

Economical Solution to Link HDTV Audio to 5.1 Surround Sound System
You don't need to spend a fortune on an expensive state-of-the art sound system to get great 5.1 sound from your HDTV. This product coupled with an older generation (6 RCA cable input) Surround Sound system that you can pick up for about $100 on Amazon will do the trick (mine is an Acoustic Research AA5170). Just plug a Toslink cable from the TV into one side of this converter and run 6 RCA cables from its other side to the jacks in the subwoofer. One caveat. There is no on/off switch on this converter if that is of importance to you.

Didn't do what I wanted, but maybe I'm doing it wrong
Thing didn't work well for my use case; sound was crackly and I don't know why. I tried to use the 5.1 version with a PS4's optical port to output to two separate studio monitors, and the sound was crackly and I had to switch to the PS4 controller's 3.5mm stereo out, which irritatingly tethers the controller to the table when normally it could be used wirelessly. I was as sure as I could be that the PS4 was putting out stereo and not 5.1, but maybe it was 2.1 instead of 2.0, and that was the problem? I don't know, but I wish I could have found out somehow before buying it.That said, this may not be the standard usage, so I can't say it definitely sucks in general.
