How does it see polarity?

In terms of polarity, there is no “+” or “-“ as with electrical current. There is only direction of light flow. The tester itself will indicate if there is light flow in a strand and from which direction.

can't i just use my phone's camera to check for light coming from transceiver? how is this better?

Camera on a phone works great, most of the time. However, here is why I tend to use the FiberLert - I struggle to see dim 850nm light and often fail to detect 1300nm or 1550nm light ... perhaps this tells you more about my aging eyes or the quality of the camera on my phone ... but that's my experience - In tight spaces, I can maneuver the FiberLert into a place where I cannot fit a camera - I appreciate the ease and speed of mating the FiberLert with the patch cord or bulkhead connector along with the combination of the blinky light plus the audible beep, announcing the presence of light -- fast feedback, as compared to positioning the camera, angling it appropriately, and then staring intently to detect the light That being said, camera on the phone works most of the time
