The product page suggested that this was a frequently returned item, but after experimenting with this, I'm really impressed with this refractometer from Hallocool. This allows you to measure the quality of a variety of fluids including battery acid, diesel exhaust fluid, windshield wiper fluid and antifreeze/coolant. The unit arrives already calibrated but if you want to be sure all you need to do is put 3 drops of distilled water onto the surface of the wedge-shaped glass prism, close the plastic cover over the top to spread the liquid, wait 30 seconds and then look through the eyepiece. You must have a light source (I did my measurements outside). When you look through the eyepiece you will see a blue region on the top and a white region on the bottom and the dividing line between these two regions is your measurement. So for distilled water at 68°F you should see the measurement line directly at what is marked as the “Waterline” which is near the bottom of the scale. The kit includes a plastic carrying case, a flexible plastic dropper for sucking up and depositing drops of liquid, a calibration screwdriver and a soft cleaning cloth. Once you are satisfied the unit is calibrated, you simply retrieve a few drops of whatever liquid you want to test with the flexible plastic dropper and put 3 drops on the glass prism and close the plastic cover to spread the liquid. Wait 30 seconds and look through the eyepiece to read your measurement. I found this thing works like a charm. There is an adjustable focus near the eyepiece if you need it but mine was set properly when it arrived. Price is appropriate for this item. I’m going with “highly recommended” with this one because I don’t really see how they could improve it, it works great.

This is an excellent antifreeze refractometer. Very easy to use and read the results. It is compatible with all antifreeze brands and it functions very well. The directions are well written and easy to understand. Calibration is as easy as testing antifreeze but you need distilled water to do it. It even comes with a screwdriver for calibrating and a cloth for cleaning the lens. The included storage case is excellent. Not a big deal but I have 2 minor issues with it. First, the temperature scale is only centigrade. Second, the need to use distilled water for calibration. Luckily, I had some on hand. It's a very good value and could save you a lot of money either by eliminating unnecessarily changing your antifreeze or by making you aware that antifreeze needs to be changed before catastrophic engine failure from inadequate coolant/antifreeze.

You just put a drop or two on the glass on the tool, then close the flat plastic lid on it so that the liquid spreads out, then hold the eye piece up to your eye and position the tool so sunlight hits it. You will instantly see the value of the liquid you are testing. We've come a long way from hydrometers to test coolant strength, or battery specific gravity. There's no guess work with a refractometer. The way it works is that it's measuring how much light bends as it passes through the liquid and from that refraction, you can determine a concentration. That is what the scales show. Any liquid can be measured by refraction. All you need is the appropriate scale. The optics and graphics on this tool are very good with very sharp scales with a very clear lens and view. A very good feature with this tool is that you can adjust the focus so that you can use it without glasses. The storage case is sturdy and well padded and keeps the tool safe. This is a very good value.

This Refractometer is great quality. The scale is easy to read. I tried it with some 50/50 premix coolant and read perfectly. Good value for the money. I like that it comes with a hard case to keep it clean and protect it. I recommend this instrument.
