Genuine Toyota Parts 90310-50006 Rear Axle Oil Seal

I had a leaking rear passenger axle seal on my 1998 Toyota 4Runner. This is the updated seal Toyota made for the rear axle. This is a simple seal to replace but take note of a couple things: -You have to disconnect brake lines, which means you'll need to bleed the brakes. -A 10mm flared wrench is needed to loosen the brake line. -You'll need new crush washers for the dill and drain plugs to replace the diff fluid. -You'll need a seal removal tool of some sort to extract the new seal. -A seal punch set is the proper way to install the new seal. I rented one from a major auto parts store for free. -If your brake shoes have gear oil on them, replace them as they are ruined because you cannot remove oil from brake pad material. -Brake shoes require special tools, be sure you have them beforehand. The proper way to complete this fix is to replace this seal and all the accompanying parts on the axle shaft (bearing, ABS ring, retaining ring, etc...). I did not have the time nor money at this time to do the proper repairs. I replaced this seal and flange O-Ring. There are no leaks as of today with a few thousand miles on the seal but I plan to replace the entire set-up on both sides soon as I consider replacing only the seal as a temporary fix. BUT $40 for the seal, o-ring, crush washers, and gear oil is something I could afford at the moment.

Genuine Toyota part. Despite what amazon says, this fits 2002 4WD Tacomas. Fits any 96-04 4WD Tacoma (with or without ABS). Please note that Toyota redesigned this seal (this is the newer version) and it has sealing issues on ABS trucks. Namely, the retainer ring on the axle that is supposed to seal against this part... doesn't. The retainer is too far outboard. Solution: Heat up the retainer ring and slide it inboard on the axle. Leave 4mm of machined surface of the axle showing inboard of the retainer. Grease the retainer, and check fitment. You should see the axle seal move some of the grease and give you an idea where it is sitting. Google Dr. Coffee's "A possible solution to leaking axle seals" on toyota-4runner.org for more info. This job isn't too bad, but there's no reason to be doing it twice.
