Lion Brand Yarn Sesame Street One Hat Wonder Yarn, Super Grover, 1 Cake

The yarn is very nice quality, I washed it with my toddler's clothes in a small Landry bag then let it air dry and it feels super soft still. My only caveat is there is only really enough yarn in the skien to make a baby sized hat. My MIL made my toddler a hat with this and used a white yarn to basically make an extra inch border for the hat to fit. It matches fine and we really like it! But if you have an older kid or just a big headed youngster and want the same color throughout get two just in case

I used the skein to make a hat for my son. The instructions that come with it are for knitting (calls for size 8 needles), but it was easy to find crochet instructions on the Lion Brand website. Crochet instructions call for a 5.5mm hook and a base chain of 55 stitches. I ended up using a 6mm hook & adding 10 stitches to the chain bc it was too small for him (he's just shy of 3 months). May have just been my tension with the 5.5 hook, but the pattern worked out & I'm happy with the finished product.

I have made dozens of the "DMC Top This!" hat kits for kids and decided to give these Lion Brand kits a try for donations to our church's Christmas Giving Tree. The 2 brands are very different. These kits are made of DK/worsted weight yarn (smaller diameter than the DMC's Aran-weight yarns). The Lion Brand yarn is "splitty" (you have to pay constant attention to be sure you pull up the entire 3-ply strand with each stitch or you will end up with one ply of the strand just hanging out). The yarns are a striped multicolor (not 3 different coordinating ones as with the DMC). I cannot speak to anyone who wants to crochet these kits but if you are a knitter, this is my plan. I found the knitting pattern on the paper band to be, in a word, difficult. I am an experienced, loose knitter. The band pattern has you knitting the hat flat and then having to seam up the back (no directions included as to how to do that, although you can find directions to do the Mattress Stitch on YouTube). If possible, it’s better to knit hats in the round. In order to knit the hat in-the-round, I cast on 80 stitches with a size 5, 6 or 7 needle (3 different hats) to get gradually larger hat sizes. I joined in the round & put a BOR (beginning of round) stitch marker there. I then knit 1.5"-2" of 2k x 2p ribbing, then switched to stockinette stitch for a total of about 6" from the brim. To do the top closing of the hat, I did a 6-point star decrease. This starts by putting stitch markers after every 14 stitches twice, then every 13 stitches 4 times. On the 2nd row of the decreases, k2tog just before the next stitch marker in the first 2 sections (to decrease both sections to 13 stitches) & then do straight k stitch for the remaining 4 sections of that row. (You now have 13 stitches in each section). After that, k2tog just before the stitch marker of ALL 6 sections. Keep knitting row after row, decreasing in each section until you are down to just 6 total stitches. Cut yarn & thread through a tapestry needle. Pull yarn through those 6 stitches, pull tight, then pop yarn to the interior of the hat and weave in ends. (NOTE: this method does NOT do a straight knit row between the decrease rows). These kits do NOT include a foam circle to help stabilize the character's head such as you get with the DMC kits so stabilizing the heads is a bit more of a challenge with these kits. To attach the Sesame St. character's head securely, cut 4 lengths of yarn about 18” each. With a tapestry needle, pull each one through the bottom of the character's head in equal distances away from the very inadequate black thread that Lion Brand sewed in to attach the head (2 on each side of the black strand that Lion Brand sewed in to attach the character’s head. I have cut at the bottom into 2 even lengths). Use the seam as a guide and don't go too far up the character's head or it will show on the outside. Pull the 10 ends from the outside of the hat through to the interior with a tapestry needle (use the eyeball-technique; it doesn't have to be perfect). When all 10 ends are pulled through to the interior with the tapestry needle, divide into 2 equal bunches (of 5 strands each) and tie a tight bow. (I no longer do a double-knot in the bow because it's too bulky and the child gets annoyed by it). I am not sure how many kids even watch Sesame Street anymore but if you make baby/toddler-sized hats, their parents will likely know all the characters and will like the hats a lot. On the upside, this yarn is softer than the DMC kits. And the price is great! The DMC kits were discontinued in about 2019 so if you are interested, grab them while you can. These Lion Brand SS kits still do pop up fairly routinely on Amazon. Happy Knitting!

This is too adorable

The yarn is so soft and works up really nicely into a hat (kid or adult size). I had more than enough to make a second, smaller hat as well. And I love the character pom for the top.

For my nephew! There's so little Super Grover merch out there I bought this for his mama and she had jt crocheted in a day, now he won't take it off!

The band on the ball gives clear, easy instructions to knit the hat. There is some spare yarn left after following the pattern. So, the hat could be made a little larger if required.
