The magnet is strong, which keeps the lid from falling down. Once you get the can on, it's hands free as it does it's work. I like it so much that I bought one for my sister. I don’t open many cans, but to be on the safe side I ordered this before having Hand Surgery. I ordered it in black, but would’ve preferred a matte black over the shiny black option. I've had about 3 of these since the 80s or early 90s. One still worked but it was over 15 years old. It was given to a friend who needed an opener. The next one was somehow mistreated and the handle broke, after years, and I'm excited to get this one. It is quieter than the other two and even smoother! I am so pleased with the performance and quality of these can openers, I continue to be pleased to buy them. They work well and smoothly. Very reliable and fast. Highly recommended - and the price is amazing. I have bought other brands and none work as well. It's easy, it's plug and play, clean, and straightforward to remove the lid. Also, I have never seen it in black (my others were white). It is very sharp in black.

I have no idea why others are unable to properly fit the can into the can opener--unless they received defective items. All I have to do is to pay attention (when would I not?) to what I'm doing, and not only does this can opener work wonders, it is fast and actually holds the can while cutting and even after it's done! I had specifically asked that question [Does it hold the can?] and received all answers that it doesn't hold the can. Guess what? It does. The cord-hiding back of the opener is a lovely touch, too...makes it easier to put away. So glad I opted for this can opener and not any of the cheaper models--or any of the more expensive models! I hope it lasts a long time.

Sadly I had to return this as it is not suitable for use in the uk due to having an American plug. It would have saved a lot of trouble if they it stated in the description that it is only useful for USA.
