This is a highly readable and well-organized book that presents its subject in compelling fashion. As a trained military historian now retired from the Department of Defense (now War), I can tell you that this book is MUST reading for everyone not already familiar with the life and death struggle that the Christian world found itself in during the Muslim invasions of Christian lands. It informs the reader by examining the actions, motivations and lives of key defenders of the West showing us the heroism, sacrifice and faith of past generations of leaders and warriors in preserving what today we call Western Civilization.

Tracing figures like Richard the Lionheart, 'El Cid' & Vlad the Impaler through their conflicts with Islam, Raymond both relays the dry history & gives insight into why they made their decisions. The book is a rare mix of extremely readable & densely cited. It puts the vast majority of academic writing to shame by not trying to stuff each page with irrelevant information, & by its' respect for those who came before us. Ibrahim flatly refuses to engage in the modern practice of projecting our (im)morals onto the past. Both the subjects of biography & the chroniclers used as sources are treated as humans acting in (reasonably) good faith; not as infallible or completely impartial sources nor as peddlers of wild myths. The physical print itself is of good quality, & I had no issues with the font choice or size.

Audiences may recognize the names El Cid, Richard the Lionheart, St. Louis and Vlad the Impaler (who was not a vampire like the fictional Count Dracula created by Bram Stoker). This book is perfect for anyone who is fascinated by the power of knighthood and wishes to witness how far some Christians were willing to go to secure their rights to live and worship in freedom and dignity. Ibrahim concludes by evaluating what is taking place now, including the mainstream media suppression of the global war on Christians. If we ignore his cautionary words, we do so at our own peril. Today, powerful nations employ erroneous “both-siderism” in what they think will placate Jihadists while civilians are physically and spiritually devoured as peace offerings to their oppressors. A decline in morality, virtue and discipline in the 21st century means that it will be difficult to imagine the courage of these eight great heroes appearing again in the modern day. I thought I was pretty good at history - no I'm not. If anything, I've realized how much I don't know about what really moved the world before my arrival. Raymond does a wonderful job bringing these heroic men to life & what's more I enjoy deeply the reality of it. By using the first or original sources of people that actually lived, worked, breathed in the period he delivers history from the people that witnessed it. Simply amazing & so much we don't teach our kids as they grow up. I remember the thrill I got watching Robin Hood where King Richard shows up at the end of the movie. When Sean Connery's velvety brogue rolled through the dark theatre speakers there was an audible gasp from the audience. It was a production secret he was in the movie & only revealed on the big screen as the scene cut to him dismounting from a warhorse with the familiar Crusader surcoat. That was the way I felt listing to the Chapter on the Lionheart King. I was robbed of this in school. Western Civ history dismissed him as an absent king undeserving of his place in history - instead I was given the warrior king, the truth of the man that faced Islam and crushed it again & again. I loved ever chapter, enjoyed exploring history I barely knew, and was never taught. My one challenge & warning - buy it but listen to it. Don't put in on as background noise - listen to every word. I have the blessing & curse of a two-hour commute everyday - ideal for "brain food time" & I was well nourished with this selection.

I like the fact that the book is based on eye witness accounts of the Crusades. I believe that these defenders were blessed by God to fight holy wars. The same God who blessed the West with freedom and prosperity will raise up new holy Crusaders when the time comes for battle. I think the book could have been written better from a Christian perspective. The writer lacks faith, it appears. I wish more people would read this book so they can understand the mind of Islam and the dangers we face today.

Meticulously researched and very informative. This is history that everyone should know. Even though the book is non fiction and heavy with facts, it's easy to follow and the historical figures jump off the page. I can't wait to read more from the author!

C'est si rare de lire un livre qui ne fait pas dans la repentance et l'autoflagellation qu'il faut le signaler. Ce livre dresse le portrait de plusieurs soldats qui ont défendu l'occident face aux hordes islamiques. Des figures qui devraient être célébrées mais qui sont désormais mises sous le tapis pour ne pas froisser ceux qui une fois de plus tentent d'envahir notre continent.

Great book one should read about history

Not only do you learn about great men who unapologetically fought for what they beleived but also get to be inspired by their courage and bravery. Louis IX and Richard the lion heart absolutely surprised me as well skanderbeg who despite his childhood, achieved what some could only dream of. The book does an excellent job at using the primary sources to tell the story itself rather than the Modern filtering through to paint a false image of reality and the Islamic aggression.

Everybody should read this book. It tells the truth and inspire us throughout our lifetime. Excellent reading and also complete.

This is a must have book for any Christian out there. I repeat a MUST HAVE! Often times not only do we never learn about our Christian heros but many of today have twisted their stories so much, that this book is a must have for every true Christian!
