Can i power these with 12 or 14 volts ac (or less) from my lionel zw transformer? if so- no polarity?

Yes, in fact that is exactly what I do (although it's not a ZW - just a 65 year old 90 watt Lionel!). And, no, no polarity issue. I love these lights. & use them for building interiors & to backlight schematic control panel. Great lights, low power consumption & very reasonable price!!!

to a point depending on what you are doing with them. I have mine lighting my train buildings. as I increase the juice (on my transformer), they do get brighter. however if they are just tied to off and on, then no.

both leads are same length, easy way to tell which is positive?

When connected and nothing comes on at first just turn the wires around.

how do i wire these lights. do i need a special transformer?

No. Just connect to a 12 to 18 volt power supply. You can get a 12v AC adaptor and cut the plug end off and wire these up to it. You can run several of these lights off of one adaptor. I really like these lights. I use them for model railroading. No special anything, nor resistors to run these.
