Yes friend, you are great! actually the grass just for decoration and abstract dogs lay on or pee on it, the another ways of use is like you said, remove the grass and put a pads under it, that's an another ways of our potty tray.

Q: Are the holes in the grate large enough for rabbit droppings to fall thru?

Hi you can remove the grass pad, the second layer of grid is enough large, if put on the grass pad, it will works for rabbit's pee.
