what all comes with this starter kit, does the game come with it also?

Game, penguin dude, queen woman, and the red crystal for your custom character. Use of your joycon or pro controller's right analog stick will be your portal to beam them into your game

How do i know what skylanders i can buy to use in this new game?

All Skylander figures from past games will work on this game, Trap Crystals and Vehicles do not work, how ever the latter does give bonus chests.

Do i need to buy skylander figures to play this game?

If you want to expand your gameplay, then yes, you do. If you just want to play through the story, you can just play it with the basic figures that come in the packaging, but I must say, it can get very hard when playing with just three figures/characters..
