I wanted to turn a really nice office chair into a counter stool for my mother. I realized that I needed to convert the wheels to stationary chair guides, and to buy a new gas cylinder that increased the max height of the chair. I actually did some measurements prior to purchasing this. Most office chairs have a maximum height of around 21-22 inches. My chair had a max height of 23.5 inches, but I still needed higher. And I later learned that I would need to account for the "plushiness" of the cushion, compared to a firmer bar stool type chair, as the cushion would sink in an inch after you were sitting in it. I was weary about how long these things last, so I tried to buy the exact size where the minimum setting was high enough to not require it to be lifted at all. So I originally bought the 8 inch lift gas cylinder. At it's minimum height, this made the chair like 27 inches high, which was too high for my needs. I ended up exchanging the 8 inch one for this 4 inch gas lift that was slightly too short, but only required a tiny bit of lift. And for the price these cost, I'm no longer worried about them not lasting for years. I can just buy another one. Installation was easy, because it was a relatively new chair. I recommend you take the wheel base off first. So place your chair probably head down, ideally on some carpet, fully exposing all wheels in the air. Then get a rubber mallet and hit against the gas lift bottom while pulling on the wheel base, and eventually the base will come off. Then get a pipe wrench or some kind of wrench with a wide enough opening, and turn it the lift cylinder to the left. Mine came off relatively easily. The whole process probably took less than 5 minutes which surprised me cuz some people say it takes like an hour of banging. My original chair piston was not broken, so I wanted to preserve it the best I could. Some say you can protect it from scratches if you put like a rag in between, but in my opinion, that's not feasible because it'll just cause the wrench to spin. I removed the old piston the best I could, but there are pipe wrench marks on it. I wanted to keep it because not only is it still good, but if I ever wanted to turn it back into a regular chair I could. Only had it about a couple of weeks, but so far so good. You're apparently suppose to go up and down on the cylinder every week or so to keep the piston lubed, but I've never done that, and most people probably don't once they find the ideal height. But that's what you're suppose to do for maintenance. I'll reiterate that I do believe this may make your chair taller than it was before on it's lowest setting, and has the range to make it much taller (drafting chair height) if desired. I've never had an issue with these before, because I always sit at the lowest setting which is around 17 inches on most chairs.

Taking the original Herman Miller Aeron gas cylinder was a pain in the rear! I tried putting on a vice grip and hammering it to the side and it wouldn't budge one bit. I then had to take a pipe wrench and a cheater pipe, got my entire weight on it the same way I do with breaking bolts/nuts on cars and it finally budged. Putting it on, there was quite a bit of play in the mechanism box so I added some electrical tape to this gas cylinder to alleviate some of the wobble. Once the wobble in the mechanism box was gone, I put the base on and tried it out. Once you set the set screw, it works great, however, there is still a bit of wobble/play in the cylinder itself. There won't be any way to actually fix it without getting a different gas cylinder but the wobble isn't as extreme as if it were in the mechanism box. Another thing to note for people that believe it won't hold over time is that the set screw needs re-adjustment over time. I over adjusted the set screw and as it sunk further into the mechanism box over time, it would automatically hit the cylinder button and activate on it's own. For those that are having an issue with it not holding, you might want to try re-adjusting the set screw again. Overall, for the price, I'm extremely happy. One other thing is that it seems to be slightly higher than the original gas cylinder but that's typical with aftermarket gas cylinders. I'd rather pay $20 for a decent gas cylinder vs $60 for the original gas cylinder (without any wobble) any day. It'll eventually wear out anyways and another one will be required.

as someone who is 6'6" tall my office chair has NEVER been amazing. I Put in the 11 inch piston with the 5" stroke and I'm honestly amazed.. For the first time since grammar school i can sit in a chair and my feet don't touch the ground if i expand it all the way up. truly, for someone with back problems(Former paratrooper) having my knees at the right angle and my feet flat on the ground. its unreal how much better my back feels already. easy install, pop old one out with a dead blow or sledge hammer. if the piston sticks inside the area below the seat spray some PB blaster in where it connects then spin it with a 12" pipe wrench. as soon as it starts spinning it should slide right out easily. I will update late if things go bad. an hour in and i am quite happy. NOTE: I did also add the lifelong black rubberized casters. id imagine those also raised the chair about 2"

Perfect replacement for Noble Chairs Hero gas lift. Relatively easy fit - I removed the whole tilt adjustment mechanism, gas lift and floor spider from the chair by removing the 4 x 6mm Allen key bolts, then removed the spider by clouting the end of the gas lift with a reasonably heavy hammer while holding on to the spider. Removal from the rest of the mechanism was easy enough with the aid of a bench vice clamped around the stem of the old gas lift and a bit of a twist of the top assembly. Reassembly was very straightforward and the chair (which is super comfortable) is now back at its proper height. No view on longevity of the replacement so far but the replacement was quick and painless and even if I have to do it every couple of years, it’ll be ok.

We may have used this in a more unconventional way, but it worked out great. In a struggle to find a comfortable drafting chair for a radio job, we opted to purchase an office chair and replace the piston with this one. It worked perfectly. The chair now goes up way higher and it is very stable. It fit perfectly to replace the piston that came with the original office chair.
