Downton Abbey (Movie, 2019) - Limited Edition Steelbook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital [4K UHD]

My wife and I as well as my married daughter are Downton Abbey aficionados and looked forward to this film only to be very disappointed. While we were happy to see the cast again, the plot was too contrived, unlike the original episodes. There was no problem with the basic concept that the Crowleys were hosting the King and Queen if the film had left it at that. But the machinations to the plot were unrealistic and contrived.One unrealistic machination was that the Crowleys were to host a parade. Utter nonsense. The King and Queen were only staying at Downton Abbey overnight on their trip to another large home for a ball. So why would they have a parade in the middle of nowhere. That required the movement of a band and a large contingent of calvary and troops from their remote posts to Downton Abbey.Now consider in the TV series, the nearest village to Downton Abbey was very small and which was supported by Downton Abbey. But in the movie, it becomes a large town. This is necessary in the movie to provide not only an audience for the parade but also for all the other unrealistic hijinks such as the plot to kill the king.However, the large town was necessary to make the final scene involving Thomas Barrow, the gay butler believable. The town had to be big enough to support the number of gays involved in the final scene. The whole scene was not pertinent to the film and only served as a distraction to the central theme of the film which was the royal visit to Downton Abbey. It appears as another effort for gays to tell their story. There is nothing wrong about being gay but why keep shoving it in viewers’ faces, particularly when it was not relevant to the film. It only left a bad taste about the movie.

I got both parents and both sisters hooked on this series after a friend got me obsessed with it. I didn't like the movie much but the series is excellent, and I'd recommend it to anyone. It'll sweep you off your feet.

They should have stopped with the TV series. The movie was a scattered mess of muddled plot lines. The writers tried so hard to give each character attention, that they failed giving any of the characters a satisfying plot line. Then,they threw in the little drama about Princess Mary and her unhappy marriage. We really didn't need a new character. The sub-plot was a waste of of time, which would have been better spent fleshing out some of the other characters' stories. It all felt contrived and arbitrary. A big disappointment.

I love the Downton Abbey series. I've binged watched it several times. So, I was excited about the movie.But it was so disappointing.The actors, all of whom always seem to have such great chemistry together, didn't click in the movie at all. It all seemed contrived and stilted.The plan to outfox a royal pompous butler and other royal staff seemed almost kindergarten level.The homosexual angle was unnecessary, but I suppose everyone in the entertainment industry has to add this to their shows just like they can't seem to keep out gratuitous sex or vulgar language.I'm glad I only rented the film instead of purchasing it. I probably would've demanded my money back if I had bought it.

As someone who LOVED the series, I was very excited to see the movie, especially in 4k on my new smart TV! However, this was a let down. I was hoping to see more characters get together, and also a little bit more of Anna and John Bates' little boy. I also didn't see much of Marigold or Sybbie, and was hoping to since they had aged since the end of the series. All around I found it disappointing. I wish they hadn't introduced new characters, even for the shock factor of Lucy being lady Bagshaw's daughter/heir. I feel like nobody really would care about that since they had just been introduced in the movie and now they're gone. All around my opinion but I wouldn't say it was worth $10.. $5, yes, as I did want to see it at least, good or bad. But just beware that if you're a huge fan of the series you might be disappointed.

This movie is supposed to offer audio descriptions - but no, it doesn't. After waiting for quite some time to get support from Amazon, the rep couldn't solve it. I originally bought the SD version, so we figured maybe the HD version is the only one with the descriptions. Now I have two versions, neither of which I need or want. I NEED an audio described version for my blind mother. Amazon support used to be good -- it is going downhill fast.UPDATE: It turns out Amazon's audio described movies do not work on Roku! Clearly this is a corporate decision in the vein of a monopolistic effort. In any case, the customer support team should be informed of this and know it. In addition, Amazon should note this exception where they list a movie is audio described.

I have never been motivated to buy a film rental since the old BlockBuster days. I refuse to pay for an early viewing, well make that a few years before it is available on Amazon or another content provider. However, Downton Abbey is one of my favorite indulgences and I enjoyed the BBC/PBS series for many, many years. When the film was available, I made the big decision to see it and very glad I did! It was full of plot intrigues, revived character matchups, expected interactions, surprise guests and gorgeous sets. I could not ask for more. If you loved the series, you will appreciate hours of excitement following the Crawley family into the modern world. Super HIGH Recommend!

Lustigerweise bekamen wir die DVD passend zum 31.01. geliefert und wollten uns damit gemütlich auf den Brexit einstimmen. War aber nix mit "gemütlich" ...Nach dem Start des Films wurde erst einmal minutenlang verzweifelt versucht, Bild und Ton so einzustellen, dass man von Filmgenuss reden kann. Es ist uns nicht gelungen. Die üblichen schwarzen Kinofilmbalken und eine merkwürdige Unschärfe des Bildes ließen sich nicht abstellen. Der Ton ist ebenfalls nicht besonders, da sind wir von einfachen Fernsehproduktionen wirklich besseres gewohnt. Was mich gleich mit Maggie Thatcher ausrufen ließ:" I want my money back!"Zähneknirschend versuchte ich dann, mich in das Filmgeschehen zu versenken und mich einfach nur über ein Wiedersehen mit D.A. zu freuen. Leider ist mir das nicht gelungen. Was hat man sich nur dabei gedacht, so einen Schmarrn abzuliefern? Der Plot bietet Stoff für eine ganze Serie, dafür war dann aber was nicht da? Kein Geld, keine Lust, keine Zeit? Get D.A. done? Hauptsache es wird Geld verdient.Achtung Spoiler!Alle kriegen noch mal ihre Routine-Auftritte, aber es gibt einfach nichts wirklich Neues zu vermelden. Außer, dass letztendlich im Schnelldurchlauf jeder Pott seinen Deckel bekommt, also alle "Sologestalten" irgendeine Aussicht auf "Verbandelung" haben, und vielleicht noch, dass die Dowager Countess nicht mehr lange zu leben hat. Irgendwann muss das "alte Krokodil" (meine D.A.-Lieblingsfigur) ja mal das Zeitliche segnen. Was zu einer tragikomischen Filmszene führt, in der Maggie Smith wie eine greise, silberblickende Siamkatze gefühlt minutenlang in die Kamera schielt. Unterirdisch! Was soll das denn?Filmteam und Schauspieler werden wohl ihren Spaß gehabt haben, ich war allerdings recht ratlos ob der filmischen Ungereimtheiten. Die Ballszene am Ende wirkt eher wie von der Muppetshow abgekupfert (à la Kermit und Miss Piggy beim Tanzen), und warum legt Molesley beim royalen Dinner einen Monty-Python-mäßigen Albern-Auftritt hin? Als ob der Kerl kein Benehmen gelernt hat ...Vielleicht erinnert das auch eher an angestaubte deutsche Komödien mit Theo Lingen und Heinz Erhardt. Die Scharaden der Dienerschaft, um das royale Dreamteam auszutricksen, stammen aus der Mottenkiste und sind einfach nur unglaubwürdig. Was mich zu dem Zitat verleitet: "We are not amused!". Betrügen (falsche Nachrichten), Betäuben (also Vergiften) und Freiheitsberaubung sind schließlich nur Petitessen im Kampf um die Souveränität von D.A. Woran erinnert mich das gerade? Ich komm' nicht drauf ...Der gute Tom rettet die Monarchie; Edith kriegt ihr Ballkleid nicht (Couture-Roben-Lieferung an eine Society-Größe wie ein schnöder Paket-Irrläufer von Amazon!?) und hadert mit ihrem Schicksal als "öffentliche Person", Lady Mary trotzt mal wieder tapfer dem Schicksal (diesmal nicht im matschigen Schweinkoben sondern beim Stuhlaufstellen in einem Unwetter!), Lord und Lady Grantham schweben oft ahnungslos oben drüber - business as usual eben. Warum ein eigentlich kranker und somit ausrangierter Butler wieder aktiviert wird? Hm? Während Thomas sich verabsentiert und in einem Pub abschleppen lässt, ahnungslos wie ein Kind nicht sein sollte (Der Onkel hat was Feines, komm doch mal mit.)? Das "Trouping the color" war geschickt eingebaut (Ja muss das denn sein?), genau so wie das Benennen des Monarchen als KAISER und König. Haben die doch sonst nicht so betont in der Serie!? Clichés bis zum Abwinken: Edith bekommt den Ballkleid-Irrläufer in einer Größe, die auf die "übergewichtige" USA anspielt. Der französische "Hofkoch" ist eine unglaubwürdige Witzfigur. Und wieder muss eine uneheliche Tochter in die Familie aufgenommen werden, u.a. damit aus Witwer Tom doch noch ein Großgrundbesitzer wird.Nein, langweilig war es irgendwie nicht, aber für mich nur mittelprächtig unterhaltsam. Der Film platzte vor teilweise sinnloser Action aus allen Nähten. Weniger wäre mehr gewesen. Lichtblick: Die Ausstattung! Gebäude, Bekleidung, Gärten, einfach grandios. Was ich so erkennen konnte ...Ich wäre ja geneigt 3 Sternchen zu geben - um der alten Zeiten willen. Dummerweise muss ich den Film jetzt aber erst mal aus meinem Kopf kriegen, damit ich die Serie in englischer Sprache (ich höre mich gerade ein) genießen kann, ohne dabei die Filmauftritte vom albernen Molesley und der ollen Siamkatze vor Augen zu haben.Die gnadenlose Abwertung auf einen Stern erlaube ich mir aufgrund der miesen Bild- und Tonqualität.

It held interest throughout definately a film i will enjoy watch a number of times

Very disappointed

Auch wenn ich nur die DVD Version des Kinofilms gekauft habe, weil ich die Staffeln auch als DVD habe und meine Sammlung komplettieren wollte, ärgert mich die Bildqualität des Films über alle Maßen.Ich habe 20 Jahre alte DVDs die eine bessere Bild und Tonqualität haben.Mir kommt es fast so vor als ob die Bildqualität wie bei der Internetverbindung absichtlich gedrosselt wurde.Zum Film selbst muss ich schreiben das ich selten so etwas Belangloses gesehen habe und die Verschwendung durch den Adel, dargestellt durch die Königsfamilie, absolut Kontraproduktiv für die ganze Serie ist.Wer die Serie liebt, sollte auf den Film verzichten.
