Q: Is this compatible only with rectangular down spouts and not round?

Yes, most standard downspouts are 2" x 3" and the leaf eater has the adapter to slip on the leaf eater to covert to a rectangular downspout.

Q: Do these stop pine needles (douglas fir, hemlock, spruce needles etc) ?

Yes I find that if I let them build up they also help increase the ability to filter. I have never cleaned the pine needles from the screen.
