Does the dmp181zx have a higher volume of air compared to the dmp180zx

I own both compressors. Yes the 181 has a larger displacement pump than the 180. I have used both to inflate larger truck and equipment tires. The 180 is adequate to handle household tasks and is a great compressor. The 181 is a bit larger in displacement so it will fill faster. I’ve yet to have a need to fill anything over 110 PSI . The newer model will do so easier with less effort and faster. On a side note, I wish Makita would do away with the trigger and just have an auto fill, but I do understand it from a safety standpoint. Overall, They’re both great tools. I do like the larger one better however both will perform adequately.

Does trigger lock in place, or must it be held down while airing up, like the 180 model?

They sell a Velcro accessory to lock the trigger, and it still shuts off when it hits pressure shutoff. You can search here or on the big auction site that starts with E

How long will it take to bring a car/truck tire from say 28 psi to 36 psi?

Just a minute or so. The unit worked very well for me in airing up my 40 psi tires.
