Great Book
The War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells, first serialized in 1897. The War of the Worlds was one of the first and greatest works of science fiction ever to be written. Even long before man had learned to fly, H.G. Wells wrote this story of the Martian attack on England. The plot has been related to invasion literature of the time. The novel has been variously interpreted as a commentary on evolutionary theory, British imperialism, and generally Victorian superstitions, fears, and prejudices

Amazed to know that this book came out 120 years back.
Wouldn't be wrong to say HG Wells planted the very idea of how outer space creatures look like. Especially for most of the directors. There's a brother character which abruptly ended. Except that part rest of the book keep you hooked for quite a good hours.

Very boring but good for learning about some scientific concepts about aliens
This book is great but only for the hardcore hg wells fans. I didn't like that there are a lot of old words in this book, which nobody uses and most people don't know the meaning of.The story is very boring and uninteresting. I only gave it 4 stars because it has a lot of science concepts in it and you can learn a few while reading

As good as the movie
I read the book after watching the movie and felt that it was as good as the movie despite the fact that it written a long long time ago. HG Wells, even though he has written about ETs, has made sure that the human and emotional angle is intact in the book. That is something which makes it worth reading and reading carefully.

An illusionary vision of terrestrial space.
An interesting science fiction full of a different sort of paradigm.

Classic science fiction
Having seen the films, I felt it was time to read the source document of the cinematic presentations. The book is far more interesting than the celluloid examples. In fact it is time a genuine portrayal was produced. The double cd featuring Sir Richard burton far more closely follows the plot of H G Wells masterpiece.A good read with vivid imagination and descriptive passages. The only problem for me was the need to see a true portrayal of this masterclass produced.

Return to an old classic
Nothing I can say about this book that has not already been said. I first read this when I was 8 years old, and over the past 50 years I have returned again and again to re-read this classic. Each time I think it gets better. The descriptive language used draws the reader in and paints a view of the desolation of London by the Martians which no other book has equalled. Suffice to say, this book is a classic for a reason.

a masterful blend of science and fiction.
A brilliantly original tale of alien invasion done through the eyes of two brothers at the turn of the 20th century. The book is pretty horrifying in some of it's detail and the scale of devastation that unfolds, it's also a sort of survivor story too. There's gratefully no forced love story thrown in, as if people would care about stuff like that during something like this. The story feels terrifyingly plausible and is a masterful blend of science and fiction.

Sea Wolf Illustrated1898 Edition
So many editions of this classic available on Amazon, so I've specified which one I'm reviewing above.I already have a number of different editions of The War of the Worlds, also some graphic novels and the Orson Welles and BBC Radio presentations, and film adaptations. This Sea Wolf edition does mention that some of the text has been changed to American spellings...so in my opinion that means it's not really a facsimile of the 1898 edition! I was, however, more interested in the illustrations from that period. They are scattered throughout the text sometimes quite small, sometimes half a page or so. They are of their time, and the depictions of the Martian war machines actually look as if they're from an early Disney cartoon film...they even appear to have cartoon eyes! There are a number I hadn't seen before...one of the other copies of the novel that I have contains some of the illustrations from this original period, plus others from later editions. The font used adds to the impression of it being a early edition. For the price this is a very good addition to any H G Wells collection...or a great book to give to someone who has never read it, as it gives a flavour of the actual time the book...and the invasion...happened.The only flaw was that the thin cardboard of the large envelope it was delivered in didn't stop the book getting a little battered in transit. I definitely don't think it would have survived a Martian heat ray!

War of the Worlds by H G Wells
What I love about HG Wells’s books is the fast paced drama and action and this book is no exception.Scientists notice strange flares of red gas coming from Mars and heading directly towards Earth. An object falls from the sky making a huge pit in an area near the narrator’s house. He discovers that the object is not a meteorite, as first thought, but a strange cylinder with noises coming from the inside, which he later discovers are Martians. At first people carry on as normal because the Martians, though aggressive, appear to be unable to escape the pit. That is until more objects fall from the sky and the narrator describes 2 tripods reaching high up above the houses moving towards him.HG Wells’s books are very ‘ sciencey’, that’s the only thing that put me off but the action more then compensates. Of course, there are those that love detailed scientific narrative, in which case they will love this and other HG Wells books. Another thing I love about this author is his incredible imagination creating unique ideas for stories well ahead of their time. You can read this story in one sitting. This is perfect for me because I find it hard to read from the same book for hours on end. I usually have several on the go and swap them about. What did I learn? That you should try to read the original book before you watch the film adaptions because they can be surprisingly different. Oh and to be wary of any falling objects from the sky.
