Cal Newport 2 Books Collection Set (Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World, So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love)

I purchased this book as a suggestion for increasing productivity. I'm only in a couple of chapters but so far, the book is great. The second book was definitely a bonus.

So good they can’t ignore you is the better of the two books. Okay reads, but lots of filler to pump up the book length. Author seems a bit full of himself. I don’t think he has stumbled on anything revolutionary here, but he writes like he has. I enjoyed reading Gladwell more.

Both of these books are fantastic (as is his other works like Digital Minimalism). Cal has clearly done very detailed research on the topics he writes about. Deep Work could legitimately impact organizations if they decided to implement these principles. It would increase productivity while simultaneously improving quality of life for its employees. The most helpful part is he does not take an approach is if he understands everyone's personal circumstances, but he offers more of a framework that individuals could apply as appropriate to their situation. So Good They Can't Ignore You offers a critical look at the idea that passion should guide our career choices. This is a relatively new idea (becoming popular in the 80s or 90s) and has had a negative impact ever since leading to very poor career moves for many. In this work he proves that putting in the labor to whatever you do and being really good at it is far more impactful than feeling "passionate". I originally read these as ebooks from the library and had to own them for my personal collection. Must reads no matter your career path.

Great piece of work I have to say. My friends and I started a book club with this set and we are more than appreciative for studying such knowledge! I highly recommend any books written by Cal Newport!
