Q: Is there anything to hold the paper down to keep it from moving while cutting?

There is no accessory for this since the blade is very sharp and easily slices through the paper held in place with a little finger pressure.

Q: Is it easy to see exactly where you are going to make the cut?

You can see the edge of the fixed blade along the side o the cutter which is where the cut line will be. There is also a scale ruler. professional photographers use this trimmer frequently

Q: I think it's great but it only cuts in one direction. Is there a way to fix this?

The wheel will cut either way, but the cutter is designed to work best when the paper is set against the ruler and the cutting head is moved right to left..

Q: What is the width (inches) of the cutting surface? It doesnt show what the ruler up close.

The total surface is 21.5 inches (cutting side) by 12.5 inches. The grid is 15 inches (cutting side) by 12 inches. Max cutting size is 15 inches. The cutter itself takes up the extra space along the long edge. Hope that helps. Best trimmer my wife says she's used.
