Gentle intro to Remembrance/Memorial Day, good read-aloud for k-2.
Published by Scholastic Canada, this book shares the importance of the poppy as a symbol of remembering the fallen. The poem "In Flanders Fields" by Canadian Dr. John McCrae is included, along with historical information in the back of the book. Tasteful illustrations and gentle poetry offer a good way to introduce young listeners to the concepts of Remembrance Day or Memorial Day. Although there are a few Canadian references in the art and text, I plan to use it with my American children. Very nicely done, worth including in your collection.

Excellent book for making connections
This book is written in very simple language to explain World War 1 to young children. There are even a couple pictures to help make connections and make the topic relatable. For example, in one picture a grandfather is sitting with his grandchild and showing them a picture of himself as a soldier and showing them the medals he earned for his time serving his country. As a teacher, I am always looking for resources that can break down big ideas and make them easier for my students to make connections so they can understand the topic better. WWI and WWII were huge historical events but as time passes on, it becomes harder for students to make connections and understand the significance. This book does an excellent job of achieving that goal for children in grades 1-4.

Great book to introduce kids to history
We loved learning about the history behind Canadian’s participation in the world wars and how the famous poem came to be. There are not many books on this subject so we were glad to come across it.

Great Remembrance day book
There are not many books out there at an elementary school level. However, this was a great resource and helped to explain remembrance day to my students. I recommend this to anyone.
