W31XE1 - Standard of Excellence Jazz Ensemble Method - 1st Alto Saxophone

The book itself is in excellent condition and arrived promptly. Unfortunately, the photo and description indicated this book would come with an accompaniment CD, when in fact it comes with an online code to be used in an APP. While this might be more convenient for some, we purchased this particular one BECAUSE of the CD rather than the mobile app. Otherwise, the book is excellent.

I use this series for my JH Jazz band. Teaches ideas for solos in segments and then builds on that. Pretty good for improvising, but most of my students lean toward doing written solos.

If you've never lead a jazz group, or have a mixed level or junior high group this is a perfect way to start. I've used every song in this book several times over the past 11 years and continue to use it, along with the Advanced series. I have a 7-12 group so I have to mix it up as needed. Each book has a play along discs, but few of my students actually do the work, so I make them play along with the exercises in rehearsals. It really helps them learn to read, faster than most methods. It also walks them through the process of improvisation in a way that is very accessible, and very helpful.
