Highly recommended as a fun and interesting read
To cut to the chase – I highly recommend The Green Years by Karen Wolf. I was glad a neighborhood friend recommended the book because I’m not one to read a book by a first-time author; however, I’m extremely glad I did.I enjoyed the book because of the character development and the interesting relational interaction among the various characters. I also was very interested in the historical setting since my father was born and grew up in the area in which the story takes place. He was also only slightly younger than the main character of the book. It doesn’t hurt that the storyline includes the KKK, the sale of booze during the prohibition and a touching first-love romance. As it states on the book cover: “This coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of small-town life will tug at your heartstrings”. I totally agree.

A little gem of a book
I loved this book. It’s a simple tale, told simply, and brings to life a singular time in American history, right after the Great War. The central character and narrator is Harry Spencer. You come to like him for his decency, his entrepreneurial spirit, his backbone, and the way he jumps into life in spite of odds. Woven into this coming-of-age story are threads about Prohibition, the upsurge of the Ku Klux Klan in the early twenties, the advent of the automobile and electricity. The reader gets to experience firsthand how that must have felt. Harry seizes on these modern changes to launch a career and win his girl!

A Book to Curl Up With
Karen Wolff’s coming of age novel is a fast and entertaining read. Young Harry Spencer gives us a sometimes disturbing, sometimes amusing picture of South Dakota life for a young boy in the aftermath of WWI. We feel his pain as he learns about the physical and emotional toll of war and discovers the hard truth about his father. The Green Years is a well-written slice of American life.

Interesting, well written, enjoyable book!
Liked the story. It was a Christmas gift to my husband and we both read it. After we finished it, we donated it to our local library.
