M**H
a welcome surprise!
if you read reviews of the final mk3 concerts there are always criticisms of blackmores playing, something along the lines of how he was doing his own thing and not really giving his best.listen to his guitar playing on this collection and you can only call it ferocious and totally brilliant.he is at his idiosynchratic best.the opening riff of burn is as hard as it has ever sounded.forget made in europe, this is the real thing.the only drawback for me is coverdale who seems to be totally in the shadow of hughes when it comes to working the audience.he is a great, great singer but it is obvious even at this stage that hughes is intent on exerting his soul influence that would later become painful to hear on the bolin era live albums.overall an essential album for mk3 fans that blows made in europe away.as a concert recording it is far more listenable than the final concerts cd set.deep purple live albums seem to come out every week but this one is up there with the better ones.sound quality is brilliant, digitally re-mastered making it sound less dated than it could have done.well done to whoever dug this one up.for your next trick can we have a live album from the final mk2 tour please?!!!!!!!
