Is there a measurement on the outside tube for the accumulated inches or do you have decant from the outside tube through the inside tube to measure?

Accepted Answer

No there is not a measurement on the outside tube. You must decant in order to get an accurate measurement. I just performed the calibration test myself and each 1 inch of water collected on the inside tube is not equal to .10 inches collected in the outer tube as some state in these answers. The closet that you can get to measuring without decanting is by using the formula in user okrah’s answer which is: Where the outer tubes water level meets the inner tubes markings, take that decimal number and multiply it by 8.8 then add 1 (this 1 is the amount of water already filling the inner tube) and that will give you a very close measurement. Albeit not as accurate as decanting.

Question 2

What is the maximum capacity of the gauge in inches of rain? I'm guessing about 13".

I believe it's at least that.  The inner cylinder is 1" than flows into the large outer cylinder which has to be decanted inch by inch into the inner cylinder as my outer cylinder was never marked.  I only ever recall a maximum of a 6.00" rain here on the farm.

Question 3

Why is the top of the rain gauge so loose? Does it screw on it feels like any wind will take it. I am confused please help.

I don't know how the top of your rain gauge can be loose because the funnel piece on mine fits snuggly. Without being there with you I can't properly evaluate your situation. This is the second rain gauge I have purchased and both were the same with nothing loose. Be sure to remove funnel and inner cylinder if you are measuring freezing rain or snow.

Question 4

How many ounces or ml does this hold? (I'd like to keep the collected water as samples).

The one inch guage , which sits inside the outer chamber, holds 200 ml. The outer chamber with the 1 inch
guage in place, holds approx. 1750ml. more.  If you live in an area subject to frosts...water in it will freeze and crack and ruin the unit. The whole unit needs to come in.   Marilyn
