Yes, there are 3 reagents for the chlorine test. 5 drops #1 + 5 drops #2 tells shows free chlorine, then add 5 drops #3 to get total chlorine. The difference between the two is combined chlorine. However, if you want a really accurate test, then I'd recommend supplementing with a FAS-DPD test kit.

How long does one kit last?

Depends on what you mean by "last." You'll need to replace reagents that get used up or expire. I test both a pool and a spa weekly so have to replace some reagents yearly. Taylor kits are widely used by professionals so the reagents are easy to get at pool stores and online. I expect the core kit (case, booklet, testing tube, etc.) to last 10 years. This is an excellent kit! Much more accurate and easy to read than test strips. So easy once you've used it a few times.
