I would say just iron on would not stick well. You would likely be able to sew. However, this is a lined backpack so you'll be going through 2 layers atleast.

Is the bottom of the backpack padded to protect a laptop?

I ordered two backpacks to see which one fit my computer the best. This is the one I returned, so I don't know about this backpack, but the bottom of the one I kept is slightly padded in the computer section and the middle section. The very front was not at all, but this front looks like it may not go all the way to the bottom. I added a little under the computer in the one I kept.
