Superb piece of kit from Penn. As an amateur beachcaster, I really wanted to be able to cast into deeper water but the cheap reels never really made it. I paired this reel with a Continental 15' rod and a casting cannon. Im able to get so far out now, I cant even see the splash. My fishing buddy was so impressed with this reel he went and got one/ Trust me, you wont be disappointed. Smooth action and lays braid beautifully on the spool that it slips cleanly with no snags. nice clutch and brake that actually works (unlike my last reel!) Just have to remember to lower bail arm as its not automatic which is a really nice feature. Comes with 2 spools and rubber sleeve so you dont need backing mono on braid, very nice.

I am a newbie when it comes to sea fishing and have no idea what is good or bad quality. But one thing I do know is the first real I bought for 25 quid fell to pieces within six months so I thought I needed to do some research. After asking a lot of questions to other fisherman I discovered there were two or three brands which ranked higher than all the rest so then I had to try and do some narrowing down. Eventually I decided on this model and I only chose the 8000 because that's what I had before. I must say I am delighted with the smooth running and operation of this beautiful real and have filled it right to the top with good quality braid and went straight out to fish with it to see if I could break it in. It took me three visits to catch my first fish on this lovely piece of equipment and to my amazement it was more so my first ever seabass weighing 6 1/2 pounds. So the bottom line is I really love this real and to make sure I stayed loyal to the brand. I also bought a rod.

I've been using this reel (7000 size) for eight months now and had no problems. Happy with purchase.

Good reel, on downside Is it's not having auto on the bar to wind the line back in, you have to flick it back over after casting. It's a great reel other than that issue.

Excellent real used for few months now, never had and issue yet

I didn't realise how much I'd been struggling with a ,normal, reel that I was using for kayak and shore fishing until I bought one of these. Extremely well designed and works very smoothly. Comes with a spare spool so that you can pre-load with different line for easy changing. Doubled the casting distance from my old reel, but, more importantly for me it made the reeling in ever so much easier - especially on the bigger catches like the smooth-hound pictured (catch and release). So happy with this reel that I bought another.

Quality you expect from Penn, comes with two different size spools. I use braided line which means you get a greater length for pound age, compared to mono line. Which gives you plenty of line, even on the smaller spool. The bearings are quality and mean it has a really smooth action and the clutch works really well, so easy to adjust too.

I own 2 of these beauties. I did not write a review until I had thoroughly tested the reels and how they handled larger fish. I can tell you this, they have been tested. This is a reel that is a must have if you fish in the surf or just want a long safe cast. This thing does not even hesitate to take on the big ones. I use 50# braid on mine and they perform exceptionally. After a year of hard fishing, they are still just like new. A few scrapes but still a masterpiece. What else can I say, they are Penn and that is all I need to say besides what I have written. Keep them clean and I think they will last forever. I live in Florida, and they are always my go to rod and reel combo.
