Finds leak(s) and fixes it!
We were losing about 1 to 2 inches of water every couple of days from our 35 year old inground pool but at an inconsistent rate? We suspected our pool steps and wanted to verify. The leak detection dye and syringe is easy to use and worked very well. We turned the pool pump off and waited about 5 to 10 minutes for the pool currents to settle. Tested near the suspected cracks with a very small squirt, which comes out as a small ribbon of bright neon green dye. The dye was sucked right out of the crack and more so if you flexed the step. Hence the inconsonant loss rate from weekend to week day rate. We quickly found a total of three leaks on the stair treads. We checked the rest of the pool around the skimmers, light niche, supply fittings and found none. This took all of 20 minutes to do.To fix the leak which can be done without dropping the water level which is awesome. Is to take the roll of two part epoxy putty and use scissors to cut about 1 1/2" off for a three inch crack. Removed the plastic wrapper and knead the green & white putty into an all white ball. But do not over knead as it will over set. Quickly roll it like play dough to length of the crack to repair and press on the crack underwater. One trick they suggested, was to then use some plastic like a sandwich baggy as a glove and keep the putty from sticking to your hand and start working the putty into the crack and to flatten out be uniform with the stair tread. This took about 20 minutes and from leak detection to repair under an hour! Looks great, stopped the leak instantly and the putty has hardened up and has stayed white as the steps! Very nice.

DYI pool leak detection.
I have significant water loss from my pool. If you find and patch the leak inside your pool, you save yourself $500 that a leak detection pro would charge. Watched YouTube videos and learned that you can release small squirts of this very visible yellow dye around all the usual places leaks develop. Pool light fixtures, skimmer boxes, water jets in pool wall and main drains of pool and spa.You can use the epoxy putty, included, to do underwater patches.Unfortunately, I’m going to have to pay a Pro. I could not locate any sign of leakage. The pros will also use dye test, but they will also pressure test the lines. That’s way to tricky for my skill set. If they find the leak with dye testing, I will kick myself for missing it. If it’s in the pressure side pvc lines running under the decking, then they may have to cut a hole to get to it. If given the choice, I’d rather them find a leak in pool they can patch, then kick myself.

The dye is exactly what professionals use to locate liner leaks. The putty was a waste of money. If possible, purchase dye, but don’t waste time on putty. Purchase vinyl and glue instead of putty. Read directions carefully and you can save money on professionals repairing your leaks.
