BGP for Cisco Networks: A CCIE v5 guide to the Border Gateway Protocol (Cisco CCIE Routing and Switching V5.0)

There are a few typos but here's the thing, if you are working on a CCIE, then you should be capable enough to figure them out. This book was a fun and great way to advance through BGP configuration.

This is a great book for learning BGP from the ground up. It covers a lot of information in as short of a book as possible. This book is suitable for all network engineers not just CCIE level engineers. Easly read for all levels.

All relevant CCIE v5 material is covered in a systematic fashion. A reasonably large network of fourteen routers is used to demonstratethe material. I have completed the entire book -- every lab -- and it is excellent.Two observations, if I may:1) I have seen some reviewers complain about grammatical errors and\or typos. Pound sand. The errors, such as they are, are not soonerous that you can't figure out what the author is saying. There aren't that many of them anyway. Certainly nothing to cry about.2) I saw another reviewer who objected to the (current) fact that the author is not a CCIE. What does that have to do with the qualityand layout of the material? Nothing. Albert Einstein was a patent clerk when he published his work on relativity. How many peoplecomplained that "he's only a patent clerk?". Nobody. The quality of the material is what should be judged, not whether the authorhas certain letters after his name.The book was easy to go through, and the complexity of the network increased as more routers and more advanced options are put into place.A nice, systematic approach to delivering the material.If you can't learn a decent, fundamental working knowledge of BGP with this book, then you simply aren't trying.

I am preparing for my V5 lab next year and bought this for 4 bucks as a refresher course. No one should pick it up without being at least a CCNA/CCNP level familiar with GNS3.Being all those things - The book does a great job of setting you up with a lab topology and getting started with configuration - as new things are taught, the lab focuses on various parts of BGP required for the exam. At 4 dollars, this is a great way to get rolling on your BGP basics. Preparing for the CCIE (and I'm borrowing this from an INE slide) generally follows 4 steps1. - gain a basic understanding2. - gain basic hands-on experience to reinforce and expand your understanding3. - gain an expert level of understanding4. - gain an expert level of hands-onI believe this book covers 1. and 2. very well.Having said that there are a few gotchas here and there - Outputs shown in the book don't always match the lab. In some instances I had to go undo other parts of the lab to make the next section relevant (removing a blocked router so a lab router had two paths again) - sometimes that kind of thing is good as it forces you to do your own troubleshooting, but it felt a little more strained as the course went on. The author has an errata page up at his website and could probably add a few more things to it -I might have liked basic configs for each chapter or for some of the smaller labs with configs that weren't documented well, but again, this sort of thing then improves troubleshooting - (so does fat fingering stuff which I did A LOT)for the price you just can't beat a nice pre-configured GNS3 setup and structured labs/material like this - it won't get you all the way but is a good start - it sounds like the author is also going for his CCIE and will be releasing more material for MPLS and IGP at a future date - I went thru it all in about 12 hrs or so at a moderately fast speed but I am BGP cisco certified and have been doing this stuff for over 10 years. I would recommend it to anyone looking to expand their BGP knowledge within cisco IOSRB

Dear Mr. Stuart Fordham ( The author of this book);I Would like to thank you so much, it is very obvious that you have exerted a huge effort in writing this book which I can say it is a fingerprint in the Networking field.Your book to me is the best reference I found covering the BGP protocol.Mr. Fordham, you have very special capabilities in knowledge transfer, your mind is very well organized and know how to produce clean and clear material. Please do not stop here, go ahead and produce other and other titles.This book starts BGP from scratch and builds up the knowledge in a logical way, using clean technical language, directly to the point, up to the level, and ends up with the full picture. Really I appreciate your efforts, Mr. Fordham.I give it 7 stars and highly recommended.

This is a great book for anyone interested in learning BGP. It is written in plain English so the reader does not get lost with complicated technical explanations and it goes straight to the point. What I love the most about this book is that the author includes a GNS3 topology, which anyone can download and follow the exact configurations and "show" output as you read the book. Also, the author had in mind an important purchasing factor: Budget. You do not need to buy expensive gear to learn BGP and the book itself is priced so that anyone can buy it.

Well written book for a CCIE candidate. Stuart takes you from the basics to an advanced understanding of BGP in the most precise and concise volume that I have read yet. Do not forget to get his follow up MPLS volume to complete your understanding of MP-BGP. I wish that I could find similar works on other technologies.

I've been through about 80% of this book, and it's pretty good at explaining the different advanced BGP concepts.I'm referring to Conditional Routing, Inject Maps, etc. The author created a very good lab scenario with GNS3 toexplain all his concepts.You can also re-create the lab with GNS3, and turn on just a few routers to do a variety of labs. This book has helpeda lot with BGP.

Thus book is very good and easy to understand the topics like one ward answers....

The author takes you through the configuration step by step. Very easy to understand but you'd need to be aware of the underlying technologies.Currently have CCNP R&S however it does not cover BGP in very much detail apart from the basics. Hence I though to give it a try given the low price - not much to lose right?! Well worth every penny!Very good value - highly recommended!

This book is very good for improved your knowledge on the BGP, I'm network technician, and I learned new things with this book.
