The only game in town, unfortunately
In his Preface, the author pats himself on the back for tackling four challenges at once: writing the book, moving cross-country, starting a new job and a new relationship. He says the book "created more than its fair share of stress" in his life for several months. Unfortunately, the stress shows with increasing obviousness as one nears the end of the book. Take his explanation of what a Singly Homed Subscriber means on page 68. I read the two paragraphs at least three times and tried several approaches: looking for the definition, deducing the definition and inducing the definition, with pencil in hand no less. No cigars. Maybe the author thinks he is beyond a simple declarative definition, but has to show his cleverness by resorting to the annoying ploy of answering a question with a question, a tactic he resorts to again and again whenever the going gets a bit rough. But in case you think single homing is bad, wait till you try wading through multiple homing. IMUX, MEDs, LOCAL-PREFS are all meshed together in one unholy mess. There is no attempt to organize the material here at all. This may be the right approach if there is some insight the author is trying to impart, but somehow I suspect that it is nothing but a mask for his own inability to digest the material. Most of us buy these books to take advantage of the authors' indepth knowledge and experience to decipher and interpret the more detailed RFCs. If that is what you are looking for, stop and reread the RFCs. Stewart is no help.

A good BGP overview
The book is composed of four chapter.Chapter 1: good introduction about interdomain routing (in plain english !)Chapter 2: the clerical part about bits and bytes of the protocol. This part, although not core, could have been written better.Chapter 3: about BGP and load balancing. The best part but too sintetycalChapter 4: the evolution of the protocololevery IP net admin intersted in peering and IP Policy must have it

This is an incredible book!!!
I cannot believe how clear the material is in this book. This book reads as if the author is talking to you. It is very small which makes it even more surprising that other authors will use twice as many pages, and still will not be able to present this topic as effeciently and clearly as this book. Just plain awesome!!!

Great BGP books, still very useful in 2017.
The Author tells you in whose router's perpective is, when he discuss the concept, so it really makes it easy to understand. I am a Senior network Engr for Australia's 2nd biggest carrier network.

waste of money
There is not much that you can learn from this book. Does not give depth about the topic and does not cover lab on bgp.

Finally BGP4 without Cisco Configurations
This book was a pleasure to read because it focussed on the technology issues regarding BGP4. There was enough TCP/IP to serve as a review and then discussion on the topic of the book. Whereas how to configure a router is important, it is refreshing to read a book that talks about the technical aspects and leaves configuration to other books (especially Cisco configurations)

Excellent BGP resource. Not the definitive book on BGP, but packed full of useful information
Short read, packed full of useful information and tried and tested truths about BGP4. The first chapter covers the TCP/IP suite which serves as a refresher for any network engineer. The 2nd chapter is very likely too much for the average engineer looking to deploy BGP in their network simply because it goes into exuberant detail on the packet, codes and message types for BGP4. The author himself states chapter 2 may be less useful for an engineer who is simply looking to work with BGP in their network. Its more for programmers or developers. The 3rd and 4th chapters are where the real meat can be found. They cover everything from multi-homing to BGP extensions. Very good read indeed.
