โA beautifully written, gospel-focused guide to Christian life and doctrine." โRussell Moore, President, Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission Throughout the history of the church, Christians have used catechismsโcollections of questions and answers designed for memorization and recitationโto teach others the core doctrines of the faith. The New City Catechism is a modern-day resource aimed at reintroducing this ancient method of teaching to Christians today. This short book lays out 52 questions and answers related to God, human nature, sin, Christ, the Holy Spirit, and more. Whether used devotionally, recited orally, or memorized over the course of a year, families, churches, small groups, and Christian schools will treasure this as a valuable tool for teaching the core doctrines of the Christian faith to children and adults alike. Published in partnership with the Gospel Coalition. Review: There's Value in Catechizing - I come from a non-catechizing background, so this is an area that is newer to me (less than 5 years). I have used a kids volume for the first 10 questions of the Westminster Catechism with my children in the past and rather than buy subsequent volumes, thought I might give this a try, as I trust content distributed by The Gospel Coalition. I have loved using it with my children after dinner a few nights per week. We focus on the question, answer, and the Bible verse provided with it. The content is challenging at times (for a 12, 10, and 8 year old) and often leads to deeper conversations. So even if it is a bit over their heads (at times), we can work to build a better foundation for essential church doctrine. I am grateful for this briefer catechism and appreciate the ability to grab it and lead my family in study with short notice. Highly recommended! Review: Just Perfect! - We are a homeschool family using the Classical method (lots of learning is done "by heart" in the Grammar phase) and this book fits in perfectly with our style of teaching and learning. We are accustomed to learning many subjects with a "prompt" question (i.e. Tell me about the Renaissance.) which this has - its the perfect format to add to our weekly memory work! For now, we'll be using the highlighted portions of the response answers. They are a bit shorter, but still packed with truth! In case you are wondering if you can still use this book if you are not part of a reformed tradition/church, yes you can. We are not part of a reformed tradition (we atttend an interdenominational Christian church) and the only answer I am changing slightly is to question #27 dealing with election - "Are all people, just as they were lost through Adam, saved through Christ?" Simple enough! You can also download an app that has the same info for use in quizzing/memorizing, and you can set it to "child mode" which has the shorter answers if desired. I really love this book and would highly recommend it to anyone!

An excellent resource, perfect intro to the Catechism
Love this for the kids. Well laid out, it's easy and simple to use. My seven and ten and twelve year olds are using this for school this year. Every Monday through Friday they write out the question, the highlighted answer portion, and the Bible verse in their notebooks. Just once a day. By Friday, just doing that alone, they have virtually memorized the whole thing. An excellent resource, wish I would have had something this straightforward to use with my older kids.

Amazing tool to teach our kids about God
Already loving this book. So thankful for the new city catechism. What a great tool to teach our kids simple question and answer truths about our great God. Such a joy to hear our sweet kids speak these truths! As Kathy Keller says it so beautifully in the intro: "You are laying the kindling and the logs in the fireplace, so that when the spark of the Holy Spirit ignites your child's heart there will be a steady, nature blaze." Praying that over our kids and any other kids (and adults) that learn these truths!

Love everything by Redeemer
Love everything by Redeemer! I got this just because I saw it on the Gospel Coalition, but after reading through it, I realize what a valuable resource this will be for my family in years to come. I never remember learning about these foundational truths growing up in Church. I am delighted to finally be learning concise answers (plus scripture references!) and have a tool to train my children when they get a little older.

Great for little kids and adults
We are doing the adult version with our 3 and 5 year old and we're loving it!! We read the question, answer, and verse at breakfast and bedtime, and by the end of the week they usually have it all memorized. Kids are sponges! The only critique I have is question 4, and only because I like the Westminister Shorter Catechism better. To compare: New City Catechism: How and why did God create us? God created us male and female in his own image to know him, love him, live with him, and glorify him. And it is right that we who were created by God should live to his glory. Westminister Shorter Catechism: What is the chief end of man? Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. Actually, quite a few of the New City Catecism answers are very wordy like this, which annoys me because I like simplicity, but it doesn't bother my kids. So I figure, if they're learning it, why not have them learn more? Overall I would buy it again and recommend it to others. (Great when paired with the Getty Kids Hymnal for family worship time before bedtime).

Every Christian household needs this.
Easy to just pick up and read, or use as a daily devotional. Could be a great memory tool.

) I'm glad we found this and have something that gives us ...
I think it's hard sometimes as a Christian parent to know what to teach your kids about God. Where do you start? What topics do you cover? I'm the Children's Director at our church and have found this book enormously helpful in giving direction to parents on where to start. We also use it in our family at dinner time each night as we learn a new catechism each week. Our 4 kids are 5 and under and our older 2 are picking them up quickly. Even our 2 year old will chime in with "God" or "Jesus" every now and then :) I'm glad we found this and have something that gives us a guide on teaching our kids the foundational truths about God.

Beneficial for all ages
This is a well put together resource. I didn't realize the benefit of the contemporary language until I compared some answers to the Heidelberg Catechism. This is much more accessible, yet still expresses the same truths. I also love the highlighted parts of the answers which provides a shorter response for young children. And free music of every question and answer is amazing! It is available for download at no cost on bandcamp, or check out youtube.

Wonderful, concise catechism
This is a wonderful book, with clear and concise doctrinal statements. It is a great book for my wife and I to go through and we are ecstatic that it has now been translated into Japanese so that we can study in both languages. If you are raising a family with elementary school-aged children, I think this would be a fine catechism to do home Bible studies with.

Great value
The New City Catechism App is amazing (and free!) but itโs also nice to study using a book to minimize screen time with and in front of my children. Itโs pretty straight forward with the question, answer and the scripture reference. I do wish it included the inspired prayer and commentaries as the app does, but overall, great value and well done
