it's pretty ok and much nicer than buying a plastic set
it's pretty ok and much nicer than buying a plastic set, however, the wood split and sheds at the seams and the light and dark peices arent's always uniform or different enough to tell apart from your opponent. luckily i am handy and fixed the split wood and re-stained the playing pieces. Still expensive for what I received but a great game to play.

Awesome Product After a Few Easy Tweaks!
I was looking for something to pry my extended family away from their glowing rectangles this holiday season during the yearly all-family get together, and our old-school connect 4 from the olden days was falling apart ... so I looked this one up. I've always wanted to make a wooden one, but never got around to it, and honestly couldn't do it for this price anyway.Overall, it's a great version of the classic game, and classes up the play area a bit if you're against brightly colored plastic stuff. I made two alterations that greatly enhanced the play-ability of the game -1) the "checkers" are both brown; we decided there needed to be more contrast ... easy fix: a couple or three sharpies and about 15 minutes and we had nice black on white checkers. After getting home, I did a second coat with a thick black dry-erase marker we had lying around, and topped that with a coat of light olive oil - nice! Sure, there's more elegant solutions, but this worked for me.2) the two pins that hold the checkers in place, at the bottom, would bind up and were difficult to remove. I contemplated attaching metal rings to the ends for easier removal, but ended up running out to the shop one night and sanding them down a bit with the belt sander. Now they slide in and out with ease.Otherwise it's what you expect. The side brackets that support the uprights fall out easily - I'm still contemplating an attractive bracket to hold in these parts, but that's just me, and they only come off sometimes while dropping the checker and gathering between games. The plastic versions are short of twenty bucks and will probably break if you look at 'em too hard - this version really classes up a classic, looks good on the kitchen table .. as such, we tend to leave it out and play more often instead of opting for new-millenium brain-mulch.

Don't do it!!!!!!
So cheaply made. Only buy if you are a wood worker that can fix all the dumb problems. In that case go for it. Looks great when its fixed but you will never be able to break it down and store it again. After repairs it must be out all the time but it does look good. I'm thinking most of you should not be put through this headache. Your choice good luck

Best version of this game around
This has always been a fun and challenging game for all ages (my son has played it since he was 6). It helps you think in multiple dimensions and plan steps ahead of your current move. This large version is much nicer to play and the wooden construction is beautiful and should be durable too. Great game!

Classic looking game
I received this for Christmas. We were playing the plastic version so much, my family wanted a nicer looking game since we were leaving it out so much.Pros: Beautiful. The light pieces show up great.Cons: The dark wood is rather hard to see. We solved this by taking a woodburing tool and burning a flower pattern onto each piece. It solved the problem and the dark wood shows up wonderfully. (I expect you could draw something on it with a magic marker. Thought about staining the dark wood darker, but not sure that would've helped. It needed a contrast. And we decided against burning something in the light pieces so that they were readily different from the wood-burned pieces.) Also, when you pull out the two bottom sticks to remove the pieces from play after finishing a game, sometimes the pieces will get stuck between bottom of board and a flat piece. We finally figured out if we simply take the stick and sweep it beneath the release as they are falling, they don't get stuck.

Defective/damaged
I hate to write a negative review, but the product arrived defective/damaged in several places. The peg that you withdraw to allow the pieces to fall was such a tight fit that it was almost impossible to pull out. My husband was going to sand it down so we didn't have to return it, but... then we noticed the very thin veneer on the base of the product was peeling off. In chunks. And then we noticed the board itself had fine cracks in 2 places. It was simply much too expensive to have all these defects. We returned and amazon gave a full refund. I gave two stars because it does look like the picture and is solid wood (other than the veneer)-- it would have been a really nice piece if not for the defects.

Beautiful
Its beautiful and handmade. Some of the holes you have to work with a little, they may be to tight to maneuver easily until you've placed a few times. We just love it and it looks beautiful out. One of those pieces that you can hand down in your family.
