How do I use the horseshoe? Can’t figure out how to open it for key insertion.

The little loop on the horseshoe is for anti-lost use. It is slightly difficult to open, but once it is on, it is nice and safe to protect your key.
You could refer to the tips or find a video online. And the installation guide would be updated.

Tips as below:
It is suggested to stick a toothpick between the layers and slide the thickest portion near the end of the retaining ring so it can be inserted into the end of the clevis pin.
This will give clearance to "thread the needle". Once in the hole, remove the toothpick and rotate the retaining ring to lock it in.

D ring will not open!

Tips as below:
It is suggested to stick a toothpick between the layers and slide the thickest portion near the end of the retaining ring so it can be inserted into the end of the clevis pin.
