Too good for network television
Excellent series. Intelligent, good acting, and complex. Too good for network television. It’s too bad that the series wasn’t shot for HBO, a good script would have been even better without the limits placed by network censors.

Short lived series packed a big punch.
Excellent acting in CBS's take on ABC's NYPD BLUE. ED O'NEILL and MICHAEL MADSEN jump out of the screen.Terrific performances by all.To bad it didn't last. Hasty decision by CBS.

A great show marred by 4:3 aspect ratio presentation
A great show I've wanted on DVD for a while, but huge disappointment that it is released in 4x3 aspect ratio! Why? It was broadcast in widescreen!

Excellent cast, sophisticated storytelling.
This is a gripping, well acted ensemble detective show which reminds me of Hill Street Blues (showing my age) in its mix of police procedure and character development and interaction. Both Ed O'Neill and David Strathairn excel as the rumpled, cynical NYPD detective and the reserved FBI agent with a hidden heartbreak respectively. Their initial conflict which evolves into a mutual understanding and respect as the series unfolds is both engaging and touching and they are ably supported by the likes of Titus Welliver and Michael Madsen. There's even a guest appearance by Henry Winkler. The look of the show is gritty and realistic and the colours cool and atmospheric. By the end of the eighth episode I was totally hooked and involved in these people's lives and was sad that they only made the one series. You need to engage your brain to follow the complex plot but it's well worth the effort.
