Brilliant left handed fountain pen.
This is my second fountain pen replacement for the one I misplaced at work. It’s brilliant for left-handed people like me. I was a bit sceptical at first, wondering if it was just a gimmick. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It writes perfectly for me, a lefty who writes over the top. It glides smoothly over the paper and I haven’t so much as smudged a letter yet. It feels comfortable to hold in the hand I have had zero leakage issues. I highly recommend this pen

Surprisingly nice writer for the money.
Pen is supplied in minimalist card box, along with one blue Lamy ink refill. The finish is very smooth and modern: it feels like a quality items and looks more expensive than it is. The graphite colour looks particularly good: it looks a bit like titanium metal. The pen is mainly made of aluminium, and is quite lightweight. The little 'capsule' shape in the barrel is a hole ( there one on both sides of the pen): this allows you to keep an eye on the ink level without opening it up. The cap is 'push to fit' and there is a subtle click to indicate that it is on properly. The clip is strong and springy: it should stay put in your pocket/ bag. The nib is stainless steel, and writes a nice wet, even line: no flooding, not scratchy. There is some flex in the nib ( which is a good thing), and it writes almost as nicely as my 'daily driver' pen: a Pelikan M200 (fine nib), which is high praise (the Pelikan is much more expensive). The sculpted (plastic) grip is very comfortable to hold for long periods of time ( I'm right handed). This pen will take the Lamy Z24 converter ( less than £4), which allows the use of bottled ink instead of cartridges ( much cheaper, better variety of inks available). A great all round pen for daily use with annual special edition colours that make them a collectable too.
The Lamy Al Star is a modern classic and very similar to the Lamy Safari. It's differentiated by an aluminium barrel and cover/top but in other ways, primarily the ink cartridges and the chromes steel nibs it takes, it's identical. Lamy make a wide selection of nibs including extra fine, left handed and nibs suitable for calligraphy etc. What sets the Lamy Al-Star and Safari apart for me is the ergonomically shaped grip that places your finger and thumb in a single position for writing or sketching. I've found it to be a near perfect fountain pen and although it's price is cheap, it is a far better and more reliable pen than ones costing many times more. This is the fifth Al-Star I've bought (there is a semi-standard quartet of colours with annual special additions like this black one was in 2012) and it writes like a dream. So if you're looking for a pen that you can use all day every day and which also looks great then you really can't go wrong. If you're looking to start a fountain pen collection then this is also a great place to start too, with prices for some earlier special edition colours and models going for well over £50 - a good return on a pen that retails for around £25 in 2014.

Excellent entry-level every day carry fountain pen
Nice writing pen and I really like the grip - this almost triangular type grip makes holding the pen much more pleasant. Only had this modestly priced fountain pen for a couple of weeks but been impressed with the flow of ink and the nib is quite smooth: it has a bit more feedback than the other fountain pen I own (Monteverde Invincia Stealth) but this Lamy pen is more than half the price and any minor feedback (i.e. slight scratching) only really noticeable on low quality paper (not sure would have noticed if did not also have the Monteverde to compare against) Having the see-through window is a nice touch so you can see your level of ink. I like that replacing the nib is really easy if needed or if I simply want to used a different sized nib - placing tape over the top of the nib & pulling on the tape, away from the pen, works a treat to remove while putting back in just needs you to push while holding edges of the nib. I like idea of having one pen with more than one nib: much more economical option than buying multiple pens if you are looking for option of different writing styles. A little bit disappointed that pen did not come with a converter so can use with bottled ink. Something to be considered if you use or planning to use bottled ink: basic converter not too expensive but still an extra £3/4.

Writes beautifully and looks very cool
The matt black finish, accented by the black stainless steel nib, looks very smart. The body and cap are all metal and it feels like a premium item, with just the right amount of weight. I like the chunky feel of the pen, and the flat facets of the section (finger grips near the nib). It writes very smoothly and evenly. Would be a 5 star review if it came with the ink converter provided.

A great starter pen that feels like a keeper.
Total fountain pen newbie here. I was torn between this and the Safari, but I wanted a pen I'd still like in 50 years, and the metal barrel ticks that box. The all-black look is very sleek. It arrived early, in an unsealed cardboard box. No instructions, no warranty. Because of that, I was worried about it being genuine, but I was reassured by the blue cartridge, and the residual blue ink in the pen from testing. I followed a video to put a converter and black ink into it, and that was easy and took almost no time after flushing the blue ink out. The grip makes it comfortable to hold, and is a nice guide for a newbie, ESPECIALLY a pen-spinner like me. It's not too heavy (even when the cap is on the back,) and it writes really nicely. There's a little bit of feedback from the nib, which I quite like, and a fine nib suits me well enough. I think I will eventually buy another Lamy with an extra-fine nib, just to see the difference. My ONLY gripe is that the ink window doesn't line up perfectly with the grip, which apparently is a thing with Lamy, but for the price, the longevity of the pen, and my inexperience, I'm not terribly bothered. Thanks Lamy!

Love it. Not sure why I was using other pens
