The basic purpose of this kind of spacer is to keep anything from restricting the movement of the floor when and if it needs to expand. Anything you'd put over or into the foam that would harden, would defeat the purpose of providing the "free space" for floor expansion/contraction and thus more likely cause the floor to buckle or otherwise fail or deform. This is true for wood AND tile floors. For your application, an "installed gap" - left free of "trash" - and then filled with VERY flexible filler might suit you better. TOTAL floor failure is possible if it ever needs to move a lot - and can't. I mean TOTAL. Nature, you don't mess with... Seen it happen a few times. "Dang!"

Q: Is this removable and suitable for a historic house?

I find this product to be inserted and held in place by "pinch" tension and can easily be removed.

Q: is this fine for sealing gaps around an air conditioner?

I believe it would as long as the gaps around the ac are withing the tolerances of the backer rod. The backer rod diameter should be no less than 1/4" greater than the gap to be filled. Maximum gap of 3/4" for 1" backer rod. I am doing a diy cabin build and used different diameter backer rods based on gaps around windows and doors. Works great for me.

Q: Can this go between the house and patio?

if your using to keep out water you should caulk over to seal it better. its also good for air leaks too like window a/c units.
