As good as semi permanent hair color gets
It does exactly what it says. I have a lot of really long hair that's been a 100 different colors. I was looking for something gentle on my hair that took me back to my natural black and matched my roots. This did the trick perfectly. I used it up in three uses buy the color took well and covered my new gray hairs really well. It does fade quick the more you wash the hair but no more than is to be expected with semi permanent dye. WARNING it stains walls and furniture and does bleed until the hair is dry so be mindfully of that.

The new formula is not the same at all
The photo on the left shows the original formula (Rich Black) and the next one shows the new (Black Velvet). Each is within one day of application. Their formulas have now been changed to "use EU-approved pigments." They used to be thick and covered even my grey hair with a saturated color that would fade out naturally, starting over a few weeks and then completely over several months. Now it has a slicker, more watery feel and it doesn't cover even on day one. My grey looks like mine usually does after weeks of fading. But, even worse, the color is murky and muddy and weak, comparatively. I am so disappointed to not be able to get the color I like or the formula that has always worked so well for me. [I will also include a third photo of my original color of choice (Purple for Brown Hair), which I am also very sad to lose.] Overtone... you should think again about trying to capture a European market when you are about to lose your American market. You used to have a very good (though pricey) product... it's now not worth buying. Thankful for the ability to return it for a refund. But very sad that it's not at all the same and now I am unable to buy what I have always loved.

Changed formula?
I used Overtone when it first became a thing. The product slopped everywhere and was super messy. I loved its pigment, though, offering color JUST LIKE I got at a salon. I stopped using it because they constantly had fulfillment issues. I recently picked it back up again after a long hiatus here on Amazon. The pigment…. Leaves room to be desired. I have dark brown hair, so it should be super easy to get to black, but even after leaving it on 15 mins as it said, it just took me to a slightly darker brown. This was surprising, given my previous experience with Overtone. I used half of the can because I have thick hair, which isn’t surprising to me, but the lack of change just gave me a case of the “meh.” I have the suspicion they changed their formula, because the product didn’t get all over me, the sink, the wall, and the ceiling. I used my usual gloves and coloring protector and it was so nice to smooth the color over the hair without losing a ton of product on the floor or all over me. The dye came right off my skin after and all was good. Easy to apply. Probably should’ve left it on longer. Can take a sizable amount to saturate the hair if you’re like me with thick hair. Still giving 5 stars because—even with my most recent dabble in the Overtone arts—my hair is SMOOTH. The best thing I remember about their products, and even though I wish my hair was a little darker, I recommend it to anyone looking for smooth hair. Don’t want color? THEY NOW HAVE COLORLESS MASKS! If I ever want to get away from color, will 100% go that direction. I can’t describe how smooth and healthy my hair feels from their products. Amazing.

Not pigmented enough
Easy to use, but the black color is very purple based to counteract yellow, and doesn't have enough black pigment to cover other dyed colors if your hair is not starting from bleached blonde. It left my hair a very pretty inky blue that faded to ocean blue.

Looking for Black and turned out Blue!
Im not going to be petty and leave 0 stars. The product is easy to use. I worked it in and it was black for the 15-20 minutes it was on my face. When I washed it out, I thought it was odd that what was going down the drain looked purple. Stepped out of the shower, and my white beard is BLUE. I would have accepted a light black or even brown but this is *clearly* blue. This would be devastating if I worked in a corporate setting - I would be shaving it all for Monday. So, fellas, if you got some white/grey and looking to darken it, this may not be the solution for you,, unless you are embracing the "aqua marine" look.
