Splendid analysis of Chinese reforms
Barry Naughton wrote the best book yet on the Reform Process in China, in fact a follow up from him would be most desirable. The book gives a good background for the pre reform period, characterizing the features which will condition, policy choices and facilitate policy implementation. It is a masterful explanation of the complexities of growing out of a command economy and the progressive separation between State and Government which is at the background of the institutional reforms of the 1992-2001 opening up period in China. There is a good discussion of the problems facing the financing system and the intricacies of the relationship between State and Non State industries. It is a required reading for understanding China today and the many challenges it faces in this new stage of institution reform. It is an intellectually stimulating, scholarly and most inspired book.It should be mandatory Reading for all China researchers

Very Informative
This book is a few years old but still has some outstanding information. Some of the changes to the banking sector make it a bit dated there but it is more than worth the money for the chapters on the system prior to 1949, the discussion of the 1949 - 1978 economy, and the 1979 - 2005 economy. It does a great job laying the foundation to understand China's economy and how it runs. Moreover it is one of the few books I am aware of that includes an explanation of the economy from so many different perspectives. Not only does it cover the historical changes, it looks by sector, and at the urban/rural divide. This would be an excellent place to start your understanding of China's economy. I own both a hard copy and a Kindle version.

well-written, very informative
i'm one of professor naughton's graduate students, and this book is a great read if you're interested in the subject matter. it's well-written and doesn't use a lot of technical jargon. if you're not interested in the details of the chinese economy, it might be a little dry in some chapters. professor naughton is very knowledgeable and his passion for china is very evident in this book.

An interesting, detailed book
I am using this work as one of the textbooks while studying the Chinese economy and I find it very helpful, easy to read, and detailed enough, though it seems to be better when dealing with facts of long ago rather than with recent ones. Over all my impression is very positive. I would recommend it.

It is really not easy to find some books on China economy in English ...
It is really not easy to find some books on China economy in English language and suitable for teaching purpose. But this one is a good choice. I have used this book to teach a course related to China for two years. It provides some systematic introduction about China economy. Will be a good reference book for students.

Excellent textbook
I am using this book as a textbook for the course "Chinese Economy". Even though it is already 7-8 years from it's publication it is still very valuable. it gives very good overview of the Chinese economy, it's very well written and gives a deep knowledge of the subject. So, Mr. Naughton, I would love to see new updated edition from you soon.Magnus BjornssonIceland

one stop shop for Chinese economics
If you want a single book, that is realtively up to date (in China terms) that covers all main areas of the economy in a single book then this is a very good place to start. Some history of pre PRC and through the pre-reform era. But clearly most of the focus is post 1978 to present day. Covered is economic growth, labour markets, financial reforms, rural and urban reforms etc
