Which wall types are cleats compatible with?

French cleats’ wall compatibility depends on the mounting hardware, i.e., installation screws. The screws are compatible with drywall, but you can substitute different hardware for other surfaces. We recommend #8 x 1” screws for most installations.

Which cleat profile is the best for hanging pictures?

All our cleat types are designed for horizontal frame support and easy leveling. If you’re hanging a metal frame, compatibility is limited to Light Cleats only.

The cleats are thin and don’t seem sturdy. How can they carry 225 lbs?

Our French cleats are engineered with aircraft-grade aluminum and tested for shear strength. Measure your item and select a cleat compatible in length and capacity. A cleat must span at least 50% of a frame’s width to ensure proper support.

Can I hang a picture with just one cleat instead of two?

With the 45” Flare Cleats, no. If you are mounting a metal frame, though, then yes, only one cleat is needed, as the frame channel engages directly with a wall cleat. However, note that only Light Cleats work with metal frames (with a 3/8" channel).

Are wall studs and anchors required to install cleats?

No. But as with any project, we recommend maximizing wall and hardware support. The holes on Flare cleats help you to install on wall studs whenever possible. If wall studs aren't an option, you can use wall anchors of your choice.
