Once installed can this gate swing both wayr or just one way?

Ive installed four of these. As others stated, If you leave off the large back up plate at installation, they will swing both ways. Not recommended at the top of stairs.

Can you leave this as a slide open and closed Gate or do I Have to make it a swing gate?

You will have to swing the gate open.

does this gate swing closed automatically after opening?

no it doesn't. It is a great gate, keeps my dogs in the back room while in training or when I am gone for the day. Also looks neat and opens against the wall out of the way.
